I have used a couple tour operators and has always been my option to connect or free float.... also depends on the crowds in the caves.

The people who booked through the cruise ship just free floated, but they also then did not get the benefit of a tour guide at the front leading them and telling them about the history of the caves and the Mayan legends about the caves. I personally did not mind being in a connected small group, and the benefit of a guide for our little chain of 4 people was fantastic. Free floaters from the cruise ship groups kept trying to grab onto us and listen to our guide. Also, we paid a lot less! I would contact some of the independent guides and see what their options are, I would highly recommend Vitalino Reyes at cavetubing.bz, he was great!

We were connected with cave-tubing dot com. Our tour seemed an lot more organized and under control than the groups that were free floating.
