Smoking Policy on Carnival

There is NO SMOKING on the Port side of the ship on open air decks. That is the left side of the ship as you face forward. There are no signs posted on the Triumph, but it is written in the capers. Many of the bars have a smoking and non smoking side which is nice.

Are there signs on the decks of any of the other ships? I was told by a Carnival rep that there was and she was surprised to hear there weren't any on the Triumph.

I really don't recall non-smoking signs on the port side of every ship I've been on.

I'm assuming you had an issue with smokers on the port side?

I do recall there being those ashtrays that are attached to the railing on port and starboard on the deck above Lido. (I guess left over from the days when it didn't matter where you smoked.) Maybe that's why people smoke port side.....they see the ashtrays and assume it's okay.

I just always go by what the Capers say.

Has the Triumph recently gone through a drydock OR are they about to go through a drydock???

Some times these are the first things they take down before they go and the last things to get put back up when the drydock is finished.

The Imagination (after going through drydock) had much better signage by the pool than Fantasy class ships who have not gone through it yet.

The signs were bigger and brighter.

We just had a few issues, and I really don't blame the smokers. I think most are very consiencious of non smokers. My BF especially does not like being around ciggarette smoke. His father died of lung cancer in his early 40's after many years of heavy smoking, and so it is a deep psychological issue he has.

We were very happy to read there was a policy at all, and so were disappointed when people would be next to us smoking. I also would like to see the same policy on the cabins. We had a balcony cabin and had people below us smoking.

I don't think they make much of a distinction between either side of the boat if you're on the very top open air deck. There's no ceiling above you so it just floats away.

I know you can smoke on your balcony. I have cigars out there every evening.

We saw signs on the Triumph at the bars and things on that side.

I was disappointed that there was smoking on private balconies on the PORT side on our Glory cruise - we could barely use it due to all the smoke being blown in our direction.

There is a policy on the open air decks. That is the point of my writing this-that many people are unaware of it. It is written on the back of the Capers. No smoking on the port side of the open air decks. There are stipulated areas for smoking. I would never go to one of these areas and complain about the smoke, but if I am in a non smoking area-I expect it to be smoke free.

You are right, you can smoke on your balcony. I'm just saying I wish non smokers had a choice and Carnival would make one side of the ships cabins for non smokers.

That would seem to be a solution, but there are problems with it.

Once the smoking side was full, what is Carnival going to do? Not book anymore smokers? They would be taking the risk of not fully booking the non-smoking side.....losing $$$. Of course, this would be a problem vice versa. I just don't think it's going to happen.

Carnival has always enforced the no-smoking policy on the Lido deck pool areas, on all the cruises I've been on.

There is usually a Security person that enforces the smoking policy... and the "no drinks in the pool" policy.

They rarely enforce the "No Diaper aged kids in pool" policy... Hmmmmm...

As an ex-smoker I really don't mind cigarette smoke one way or another, but prefer smoke-free, but that's okay. However, cigars, a different matter. In our apartment a cigar smoker lives two floors above us and when he's out on his balcony and so are we his smoke circles the building. Amazing. I can take it for about 5 minutes before I have to go back in. I hate to crab about things but cigars are just really too strong to smoke out on ship balconys. That of course being said from a non-cigar smoker. I think the next time I get hit with cigar smoke wafting across the ship balcony out comes the Glade spray!

You are assuming there are more smokers than non-smokers? I think it would be just like a restaurant-if it matters a lot to you, you would only settle for the room preference you want. If not-you would take what ever you can get. And abide by the policy-whatever that is.

No....I'm not assuming there are more smokers than non.....which is why I said vice versa.

A cruise ship is not the same as a restaurant. I'm sure smokers can last for a couple of hours without a cig while they dine. Put a smoker in a non-smoking cabin/balcony for a week??? I don't think they'd book the cabin in that case.

I think that would be there choice. If I had a choice, and no non-smoking cabins were available, I would probably take it all into careful consideration and look at other cruises.

There are plenty of places on a cruise ship to smoke-half the ship. So, if a non-smoking cabin was not available, there are still plenty of places to sit, relax and smoke.

I have been on 6 cruises and years ago there were no smoking policies. I can remember the casino's being one big cloud to walk through. Things have improved dramatically, and I commend the cruise ships for this. I just think there is still room for improvement. I respect a smokers right to smoke-it is a personal decision. I just think non-smokers should also have the same rights and have areas designated as non smoking.

Reading this thread reminded me of the horrible fire on the Star Princess 2 years ago supposedly caused by a cigarette out on the balcony. The pictures of the fire were something else! Interestingly, I just saw a note about Oceania Cruise Line which forbids smoking (never knew that) and also said anyone caught would be put off at the next port. Hmmm. I'm all for having designated smoking areas (like they have (or had) at a lot of airports when I was still smoking. I'd go into those rooms for a quick one. Almost gagged to death on the thick smoke in them but God knows that didn't stop me in the least. I LOVED smoking . . . until I had my first heart attack. Luckily I quit cold turkey after that but have read that most don't. I think ships should have certain areas, public rooms, cabins, etc., for smokers but no longer out on the balcony. Just my 2 cents.

When on the Glory in December, we found the smoking areas to be very limited and over crowded on the Lido deck. It was almost impossible to find a table or lounge chair in the smoking section throughout the day and early evening. I know most non-smokers go out of thier way to stay away from teh smoking section, but the few occassions I was able to find a seat in teh smoking section on the Lido deck, each time I had people seated near me that were obviously non-smokers. On one occassion I had two women ask if they could join us at our table to smoke due to the fact that one of the women's husband could not stand smoke. Once these ladies joined our table that left him, a non-smoker, sitting at a table for four by himself. At other times I saw tables of people coughing and waving the smoke away, as I stood there without a table, looking at all the empty tables in the non-smoking area. I even had one woman ask me if I would mind not smoking while she was sitting there eating. I told her I DID mind, and that she was more than welcome to move to the almost empty non-smoking section to free up one of the limited smoking tables for the people that do smoke. She argued that she was there first. I enjoyed the rest of my cigarette while not letting her eating while I smoked offend me.

I try to not smoke in areas where I might offend people, or not smoke if I know some one is hyper sensitive to it. I know it's not a healthy habit, but smokers are more and more limited as to where they can smoke these days, and I get tired some times of non-smokers that think that even if they are in a smoking area we should exstingish.

That isn't right either-if you are in a smoking area, you have every right to smoke. If there are people who don't like it, they should be informed that, sorry, they are in a smoking designated area.

On the Triumph, it seemed pretty even. I just think that some people were not aware of the smoking and non-smoking areas of the ship because there were no clear signs to tell them.

I have never noticed the smoke as an issue. Not than many people smoke.

I do know people, however, that are so against smoking that they let the slightest wiff of smoke bother them... and opens up their B**ching session every time. They really need to get over it.

BTW... I'm not a smoker, and don't like smoke... but I also don't book a vaction where I know there will be smoke and then proceed to B**ch about it either.

We were just off the Miracle with a group of 5 couples, One of the couples smoked and they let them snoke in their cabin..I didn't think they allowed that anymore....We were sitting at a smoking table in the casino and the dealer was complaining that she was blowing smoke in her face when at fact the air vent was blowing it back into her face..Their was another lady sitting at that table that complained everytime someone smoked at that table when there was a no smoking table just across from where we were playing. I myself haven't smoked in 37 years but I don't feel I should complain when I play at a smoking table.......Dennis

I must say, I never complain about cigarette smoke, unless it's REALLY in the wrong place at the wrong time and it's posted as such, and even then I would probably just move away. I don't know what kind of smoke ionizer they use on cruise ships but boy are they good. I have NEVER smelled any smoke in any of the cabins I've been assigned to on any of the cruise lines I've been on. Whatever they use, they work great. Unfortunately, haven't had such good luck with hotel rooms at times, but that's another story. Again, cigarettes, okay, I can live with them, cigars, please, NOT on the balcony.

I find it hard to believe cigars on my balcony could cause anyone that much trouble. We're on the Panarama Deck on Glory, so it's pretty much at the top level anyway. It's outside and that should be acceptable. There are a lot of cigar lovers on ships at any given time. If you meet me, you might even like me! :D

I am not all B*ing. I am just as willing to defend a smoker who is smoking in a designated smoking area. But if I am lounging in the sun in a non-smoking area, I don't expect someone to sit next to me and light up.

Again, my beef is that there are no signs on the Triumph, just a little diddy in the Capers that probably no one reads. I think smokers would be more than happy to abide by the policy if they knew what areas were smoking and which weren't.
