Smoking Policy on Carnival

I'm sure I might like you, that's not the problem or the question. I also like my upstairs neighbor who lives two floors above me but when he's out on his balcony and the wind blows that whole side of the building can smell his cigar, but what can you do. Go back inside my apartment or get out the can of Glade I guess. Now I book aft cabins (which I love because of seeing the wake) and hopefully smoke just blows out and behind the ship. I've found that helps for me.

... my beef is that there are no signs on the Triumph, just a little diddy in the Capers that probably no one reads.

On some ships, they actually change what side you can smoke on, depending on the direction of the wind. They did on one of mine... maybe it was the Victory... can't recall.

I guess to keep the smoke from blowing across the Lido pool area.

I smoke cigars, mostly in the cigar bars, but sometimes on my aft balcony - sorry Bob!

It is funny though, while in the cigar bar how many people walk through making ugly faces and under their breath comments about the cigar smoke - IN A CIGAR BAR!!!

I think that would be there choice. If I had a choice, and no non-smoking cabins were available, I would probably take it all into careful consideration and look at other cruises.

There are plenty of places on a cruise ship to smoke-half the ship. So, if a non-smoking cabin was not available, there are still plenty of places to sit, relax and smoke.

I have been on 6 cruises and years ago there were no smoking policies. I can remember the casino's being one big cloud to walk through. Things have improved dramatically, and I commend the cruise ships for this. I just think there is still room for improvement. I respect a smokers right to smoke-it is a personal decision. I just think non-smokers should also have the same rights and have areas designated as non smoking.

As a smoker, I agree with you. It would be nice if there was a choice of smoking or non smoking cabins. My DH and I choose not to smoke in our cabin while cruising even though we can. Last cruise, we had an OV and just went up on deck grabbed our coffee and headed out to smoke. We had a great time and met some wonderful people (who didn't smoke in their cabins either). It's our decision to smoke, just as its a nonsmokers decision not to, and there is no reason to subject anyone to the smell (which is why we don't smoke in our cabin because we don't like it either!!)

Does everyone have the choice to smoke in thier cabins??? I would hate to be assigned to a cabin that smells like smoke.

Yes... everyone has the choice to smoke in their cabins.

But I have never smelled smoke... ever. I've heard that they have some sort of spray that eliminates the smoke smell.

No need to worry.

Since we're on the subject, I just thought I would ask....

Thanks!

Yes...everyone has the choice to smoke in their cabins....or not.

I think more than one post on this thread (I don't feel like going back to verify) has said you can't smell the smoke. If you do....tell the steward and he/she will work magic.

Thanks. That's good to know. I have never smelled smoked either so if I was in a cabin where someone previously smoked its good to know they have to tools to eliminate the smell.

I cant even imagine what's its like smoking in those small cabins. But I guess that a whole other topic.

No....I'm not assuming there are more smokers than non.....which is why I said vice versa.

A cruise ship is not the same as a restaurant. I'm sure smokers can last for a couple of hours without a cig while they dine. Put a smoker in a non-smoking cabin/balcony for a week??? I don't think they'd book the cabin in that case.

I've never smoked in my cabin and only a couple of times on my balcony. I do most of my smoking in smoking areas of public decks or in the casino. I think your argument makes sense for why smokers couldn't last if the whole SHIP were non-smoking. If they can't smoke in their cabin or on their balcony, though, they can always go someplace else where smoking is permitted when they need a cigarette...

I smoke....but I'm not militant about it. I don't smoke in my cabin either mostly because DH doesn't smoke and it would get smoky in there real fast. I book balconies so I can go outside for a quick smoke. Like you, I smoke maybe 2-3 a day on my balcony. I'm just not in the cabin all that much.

I like to have a smoke right before I brush my teeth and go to bed. I like the convenience of being able to step out on my balcony. Also, I like to have a smoke in the morning with my coffee on the balcony.

Now if cabins and balconies were all non-smoking, yes....I'd have to go elsewhere on the ship to smoke. It'd be an inconvenience but I'd do it if I really had to have one.

Just my opinion.....I think there are smokers who would not cruise if they had to leave the cabin to smoke. It's inconvenient. That would affect the bottom line.

I think Carnival does a pretty good job of keeping the majority happy.

But you'll always have the militant smokers and militant non-smokers that are going to complain no matter what.

Carnival does allow smoking in the cabins. It is RCCL that does not allow smoking in the cabins. RCCL does allow smoking on the balcony.

Oceania does not allow smoking in the cabins or on the balconies. They only allow it two places and from what I understand...those places are very small and not the casino.

As for folks worried about not being able to use your balcony, the ONE time I got to get a balcony (because I have the cheapest husband in the world) I took a couple of very small battery operated fans that clip onto the chairs on the balcony. That way I could redirect any smoke. I am glad I did too because we were on the Starboard side right above where the crew take their smoking breaks. This was Alaska and we were in port a lot, so there was not a lot of wind to disburse the smoke. The little fans worked great.

Also, don't worry about your cabin smelling of smoke. In all our cruising, we have never walked into a cabin and smelled smoke from a previous tenant. Now there have been posts of people who have but it really is rare.

On the RARE chance that happens, there are additional steps Carnival can take. Just ask your cabin steward to replace everything in the cabin (they can even replace mattresses) and lightly shampoo the carpet. It dries within hours. And to hit it with their magic spray again!

I find it hard to believe cigars on my balcony could cause anyone that much trouble. We're on the Panarama Deck on Glory, so it's pretty much at the top level anyway. It's outside and that should be acceptable. There are a lot of cigar lovers on ships at any given time. If you meet me, you might even like me! :D

For me, it's not normally a problem:D.................Until that big fat ash hits me while I'm standing on my balcony underneath:p. And thank god your not a tobacco chewer!:D

At one time Carnival had a non-smoking ship, anyone remember the Paradise? Don't know how well that worked out though.

Ummmm.....it didn't work out. But I think it had more to do with the itinerary. Didn't it do the same one over and over?

What you fail to mention is that on some ships, such as the Carnival Glory, the cigar bar is right outside the main dining room and runs the entire indoor width of the ship. It's where people wind up standing while waiting for the doors to open for dinner. It's in the direct path to the theater after dinner. In short, it's a stupid place to allow cigar smoking, and people comment on that. If cigar smokers were truly "considerate" of nonsmokers, as they all claim to be, they would be aware of that and would avoid smoking there around dinner time.

So let's see. The cigar bar is designated by the cruiseline and people don't want them to smoke where it's allowed.........I'm confused.....Seems like instead of beating up on someone who is following the rules and smoking where it is allowed you should be giving Carnival the flack.....

It really doesn't matter because no matter where you smoke in permitted areas, someone is going to complain. Which is why I love seeing people say "make smokers smoke on open decks and not on the balconies or in the cabins". Next complaint will be "the decks were too smoky, damn the smokers".

You can't win this battle.

But aren't they being "considerate" by smoking where they are allowed to do so? Sounds like they're damned if they don't and damned if they do. It's not their fault that the ship was designed that way.

You are correct...I can not win this battle. Although the folks who are so against smoking can......They can choose to sail on a cruiseline that limits smoking to the max. On deck smoking only in very small areas. But alas.....they don't want to spend the money to cruise on those lines.

As a smoker I am willing to abide by the rules as long as I can still enjoy the cruise. It seems every cruise more and more areas are designated non-smoking. On a cruise just ending last Sunday on Sensation, the open deck starboard above the pool was posted non-smoking. It looks like smokers must sit in the shade on Lido. The week before on Liberty, a bank of penny slots was posted non-smoking halfway through the cruise. If Carnival makes much more of the ships non-smoking, I will look elsewhere for vacation time. My take is those who object to smoking have complained the loudest with cruise lines adjusting to their demands, the squeeky wheel getting the oil. It's time for the quiet smokers to speak up if we hope to spend any time on cruises in the future.

I am a smoker and I really try to be considerate of people who don't smoke. It's just a matter of time before us smokers will be not allowed to smoke anywhere but our own homes. We won't even be allowed to smoke walking down the street. Yes, cigaretts and cigar smoke can be very irratating to people who don't smoke. What I find more irratating is people who bath in the cologns and perfumes and than have to stand next to them, what can be done about that?

Sorry, but as irritating as colognes and perfumes are...they do not contain 3,000 toxins (many of which are carcinogens). That is just not a valid argument. A human passing gas is irritating too, but it won't kill you. ;)

Although, my husband after a trip to Taco Bell comes close! :D

You are correct that soon the cruise lines will follow the lead of cities, states and even countries. Entire countries like Ireland and even FRANCE (can you believe that...I thought they were born with a cigarette in their mouths) have banned smoking indoors.

The writing is on the wall and if people want to shut their eyes...well, I guess they will just hit the wall. :)
