We sailed on Century Western Med. cruise October 2007 and loved it!!! It was our first cruise. We are doing the same cruise this October because let's face it, you can't possibly see everything in each port in only one day. Do the excursions on your own. We did research all those months before our cruise and it really paid off. We booked a driver in Rome because it can be rather daunting and we had specific things that we really wanted to see. But you can save alot of money and make the experience "your own" by going it alone. Do you really want to be herded around like sheep? That's just our experience though. Happy sailing and if you have anymore questions, I'd love to help you make your trip as memorable as ours was. :)

HI Becruiser, We've be on Century twice, east and west, and loved it, going on Galaxy this Oct. to the Greek Islands. We checked out the places that Celebrity would be doing, then with other message board cruisers, checked them out on the internet and were booked on the web with taxi drivers, they speak English quite well. We did Rome on our own, booked the train on line and paid by Visa, no problems, takes about one hour, we were the first off the ship, took a taxi to the station, were early, so they change out tickets, to the earlier train, then took the subway (under ground, depending if you from UK) to the Coliseum, was there before 9am, that's when all the tour buses get there, then took the subway to other places, got the train back around 4pm, there's a "shuttle" bus from Civitavecchia to the boat.

If your from England or Europe and have a Eur. passport, get it photostated, and carry it with you when touring, as you get discounts with it, at the Coliseum we got 50% off. Watch for "pick pockets" lots around, women with babies in her arms, but have "three hands" so watch out, one man got his pocket picket in front of us, but he caught her at it.

The shampoo and lotions in the cabins are good, so don't need to take any, also I take a small laundry hanger with 12 hangers to wash out undies etc, at night, if still damp, can dry with the hair dryer (one in the bathroom). I also take insulated cups for hot/cold drinks around the pool. hope this helps, have a good cruise, carol, Galaxy Oct. 3rd, 08.:):)
