coloradans Posted September 6, 2012 #3 Share Posted September 6, 2012 We just returned from our first cruise ever -- on the Carnival Liberty -- and wanted to do some fishing on Grand Cayman. We did some Internet research and found Captain Ron Ebanks. We emailed him, and he called after a slight delay (he had apparently been visiting the U.S., ironically). We went over possible outings -- he does close-to-the-island fishing from a nice Boston Whaler-type fishing boat, not the big deep sea chartering -- and we settled on spin-casting for bonefish and tarpon. We had never done either. Bonefish, it turns out, are considered pound-for-pound the best fighting fish in the ocean! It was, without question, the highlight of our entire cruise! Captain Ron met us at the pier with a sign with our name on it, drove us in his Ford Explorer to a spot outside Georgetown where he had parked his boat trailer, quickly hooked it up, and took us to a launch ramp about 15 minutes from town. Conditions weren't ideal -- it was really windy, although that kept it cool in the hot sun -- but my lord did we have a great time. We caught four or five "boneys" and a jack and a shad, and had something LITERALLY bite the back 2/3rds off a bonefish as my wife was reeling it in. Small shark, Captain Ron thought. We then spent a good hour going after tarpon in some inlets, which was fascinating because you actually go look for them -- their big shadowy forms in the water -- and then you try to cast to them. They weren't taking what we were offering up, but it was almost spooky to see them. Finally we kind of trolled on a nice ride back in and had two nasty hits on a giant rubber minnow, one of which was apparently from a barracuda that literally bit the rubber minnow in half. Crazy. Finally, Captain Ron is a truly delightful personality. He clearly loves fishing but also clearly loves people, and I would say it was one of the nicest, most fun days of fishing in a lifetime of fishing experiences. We're planning on going back next year and get a couple of days in with him. Can't recommend him highly enough! http://www.worldwidefishing.com/caymanislands/b1837/index.html?page_type=salt&state_page=caymanislands&company=Captain+Ronald+Ebanks+Flyfisher
