malaria in costa rico

We are schedualed for RCCL treetop and canal excursion in a few weeks. Our friends doctor recommended using Deet and malaria pills. She stated there have been malaria outbreaks not in the national park area but the tortguera canal area. Any thoughts on this . I hate to use the malaria pills because of the side effects on the gi system.

I would vote YES for the DEET and NO for the pills.

We have been to Belize and Roatan without issues.

(Cavetubing in Belize which requires walking through the woods)

I agree with you. We've been going to CR for many years now --no issues what so ever. I would never recommend malaria pills unless staying in a high risk- remote area of the region. DEET is the way to go.

I've had more sand flea bites & jelly fish stings than anything! ;)
