Military rates....why only offered on some cruises??

Just curious to know if anyone knows how they determine when a military rate can apply to a cruise. We have taken advantage of this rate on our past 2 cruises, but apparently they don't offer it on every cruise? Or is it just a "time frame" situation?

Just booked a cruise for 02-10, and at this point our PVP is telling us there is not a Military promotion.

Is there any rule of thumb with this rate promotion?

Supply and demand like everything else, but if you book with certain TA's they can get you that military discount if available after you put down your deposit.

We always use the military pricing as well. When I was checking out early 2010 dates, they did not have military rates for any of the sailings that I was checking. Carnival's travel specialist told me that sometimes that far in advance they do not have the special pricing in place.

If you really want that ship/sail date etc., I would go ahead and book it and keep checking for the discounts to show up. You can always change your booking or cancel before the penalty period.

Carnival offers probably the best discount for the military. On more sailings and saving more money than anyone else I have seen. 2010 is still a bit off so they will probably show up later. Understandably, Carnival will still be sailing then, but it's a bit difficult to project out the economic feasibility of offering the discount that far out. Just keep looking every month and I'm sure they will show up.

We book early to get the Military price, for the cruise we want. Only a small amount of each cat of cabins are offered. When they are sold that price is gone. Some cruises it may come back. Some its only some of the cats or offered. Each cruise , ship, and cats can be different. There is a little old man in a dark corner at CCL that picks witch ship, cabin and cruise that you can get a military discount and when to take it off, sort of like the banker on Deal or no deal. Thank you Carnival for having that discount.:D

How many rooms can a family get for the military rate? I have a 21 yo active duty son coming home from an Iraq deployment this summer and we are considering having the entire family of 6 cruise together - either 2 cabins or 3 - does Carnival allow the discount for more than one cabin? Also how sizeable are the discounts typically?

Thanks!

The military discount is only for the room of the miliatry person. Not for other rooms if there is no military person staying in that room. Sometimes they have military rates for friends and family, but not all the time. Just a promotion every now and then.

It varies by ship, sail date, and cabin category but we have received anywhere from 14-22% discounts off the cabin pricing. The same taxes, port fees, and now fuel surcharge applies.

BTW: My Paradise sailing did not have a military rate for the category cabin we booked. Oh well. :p

Check in May....that's when they've typically run the 1st "friends and family" deal (they usually run it again in Nov.). When they're runnin this special you can book the cabin the military person is in plus up to 2 more at the military rates.

Our PVP said they only block so many cabins in each catagory for military pricing and once they are booked then they are gone. We tried to go on one in November, the Splendor and all the military cabins in the catagory we wanted were booked. :( We ended up going with the Legend and got the discount, I believe there were only 4 cabins available in the catagory we wanted at military pricing because he told me what cabins were available at the discount and we were able to pick the one we wanted.

I guess the rule of thumb would be to book early to make sure you get one of the blocked cabins for that rate.

As for the discount, not sure if that differs from cruise to cruise but I went through Carnival site and looked up what our price would be if not using the military and it was just shy of a $200 difference in price for each of us. So that was a great deal for me!

I use the military rate, and always receive the discount on both of my cabins. We aren't able to get the discount on the 3rd cabin for our oldest daughter and granddaughter though.

I don't know the Carnival official answer to this but from personnal experience, it's only on the room the actual military member is in, and it has to be in their name. We had some friends wanting to go on a cruise with us but they needed 2 rooms and they could only get the discount on one of the rooms in the military members name. She called a PVP and then we called ours (because we really like him :D ) and asked him and he told us the same thing.

I was only able to get the military rate for my cabin though I begged and pleaded to get it for my two other bookings for teh family. Waiting on the friends and family to hook them up now.

Well the place we book through everytime...(C.com) always gives a discount on 2 rooms. My husband books with my son (18) in our room, and I book with our 2 girls, (12,16). Then my son and I switch onboard. We always travel with our 32 yo DD, and Granddaughter, but we can't get the discount for their room. Just our 2 rooms, and boy does that make a difference on the price!:D

The cruise I have booked this June has no military rate because of the high demand, so the last time I booked military was my carnival cruise in 2005. RCI is almost impossible to get a military rate. But when I spoke with the person who booked me this time, she said I could have gotten 2 rooms at the discount if they were offering one. So I surely hope it hasn't changed since the first of the year. But I look at it as any discount is better than no discount.:D

I used the military rate recently when I booked on Victory. Our PVP said as long as one person in the room has been in the military for at least 2 years with an honorable discharge and they have a DD214 that room gets the military rate, if rooms are available. We have three couples going and we were all able to get the rate because each room has someone in it with a DD214.

I am a disabled vet with over 10yrs of svc. and I cant get a military discount. I would like to see the discount available to disabled vets as well.

So would I. My husband and I were just talking about that subject the other night.

If you have a DD214 and block 24 says honorable you should be able to get it. They do make one exception to the two year rule and that is if you served in combat and was discharged with less than two years.

If you have 10 years of service then you should have at least 2 DD214's. You are given one at the end of each hitch. If your first contract was for 4 years, then when you re-enlisted, you were issued a DD214 with an honorable discharge. At that point, you signed a second contract for your next hitch. If you were separated as a disabled Vet with honorable service, your DD214 should still indicate an honorable discharge, but the re-enlistment code would indicate you were no longer medically able to serve.

Officers may be treated differently than this as far as their records go, but at some point, they should still get paperwork indicting they served honorably.

SDPadreFan is correct as addressed further upthread, if you were enlisted just use the DD214 you were issued when you first re-enlisted.
