Free upgrading?

Wondering...if anyone has ever tried getting a FREE upgrade to a higher class cabin. A family friend was upgraded from a basic balcony suite to a penthouse suite on the day of their cruise...by just asking!!!! I think they were on a Princess Cruise.

Anyways...just wondering how often, and if this ever happens on NCL??? If it can be done...when should I ask??? And how should I ask???:D

it has been done, but it's very rare. remember, there are 2,000 other people..on that same cruise...who are asking the same thing. check out this discussion:

what NCL does is "upsells". they take someone from a balcony or mini-suite and sell them an upgrade to a full suite. then resell the balcony, either to someone from a lower cabin or someone new. by moving everyone around, they sell every available cabin for the ship.

no, you can't call them about this....the phone number for this office doesn't take in-coming calls. it was too swamped with calls and quit taking them.

i would love an upgrade, but it has never happened...hasn't to many of us. too many cruisers and not enough cabins.

maybe you will be very lucky and get a visit from the upgrade fairy or the upsell fairy...i hear it's magicial!

you can check the availablity of upper level cabins, closer to your sailing..if any are still open you can check. (but usually they are sold before you cruise)

The only cruiseline to repeat upgrades from a Caribe deck balcony to an AFT mini. Everytime my TA books us on them we are upgraded. We are Platinum members, not the new Platinum Elite. But NCL has cheaper rates which counts with us so when Princess has a deal we may take it.

RCCL never did that, their casino offers are really bad, we made a $5 drink to share for a week gambling. Very cold machines also. No gambling club for discounts like NCL has.
