Fred C Posted April 13, 2008 #1 Share Posted April 13, 2008 I will be sailing AOS and our flight doesn't leave until after 6 pm on Sunday. We are five people and want to do a tour on our own to the rainforest. Does anyone know the cost?
RayInPR Posted April 13, 2008 #2 Share Posted April 13, 2008 The cost of going to the rain forest on your own? Uhhh .... it's free. The rain forest is the "El Yunque National Forest", which is managed by the US Forest Service and is federally funded. You can walk, hike, swim in a waterfall at no extra charge! There is a small fee (like $3/person) to get into El Portal Visitor Center, but that's a totally optional stop (there's a 10-minute movie and educational displays). Your only "cost" would be transportation between the San Juan area and Rio Grande. I'd suggest a rental car for the day. Here's some basic info from our travel guide to get you started ... http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/2007/02/19/el-yunque-rain-forest-an-overview-of-the-carribean-national-forest/
Coqui2007 Posted April 13, 2008 #3 Share Posted April 13, 2008 As Rayinpr said The cost to get into El YUnque is free. The cheapest option to get there would be a rental car (or more likely a minivan as there are 5 of you). Just make sure you get confirmation of the type of vehicle you rent. The major rental companies are here and you could also check out Charlies Car Rental as I believe they do pick up at the cruise piers. If your ship docks early, then you should also have time to check out Luquillo beach and the kisoks as well have fun Coqui @ http://www.visit-the-coqui.com
wv4dmb Posted May 10, 2008 #4 Share Posted May 10, 2008 We will be staying at Da House in OSJ. Where is the closest car rental agency? We have the entire day in OSJ on Saturday and thought the cheapest way to go to the Rain forest was on our own. We have 11 in our group so we know that we will need two vehicles. rainforestgirl Posted May 10, 2008 #5 Share Posted May 10, 2008 From Da House- You may have to walk down to the cruise ship area. It is not far. The Sheraton has a Hertz office there. Or Charlie's will pick you up there and take you to/from their office.

rainforestgirl Posted May 13, 2008 #7 Share Posted May 13, 2008 Thanks for the information! Are you familiar with Da House? I know everyone talks about the noise there but the rate was great so we are trying it out!! Thanks Steph :) No first hand experience, but my cousin stayed their the last night (Thursday) of visiting us to catch an early flight. She said they didn't get any sleep due to the noise. If you are out late partying yourselves and have no early morning wake up call, it might be perfect! And it is only one night, the first of a long vacation.... Go out and enjoy the clubs! Ask for a room away from the street- this should reduce some of the noise and have fun!
wv4dmb Posted May 14, 2008 #8 Share Posted May 14, 2008 We have a room "away from the party" as it is stated! So hopefully it will be somewhat quiet! We will have our ipods if we have to listen to some of our own music! Thanks for the info!
