A Sixth? Posted April 18, 2008 #1 Share Posted April 18, 2008 Port Authority announced that $150 million will be directed to redevelop Alexandra Pier into a tourism and cultural hub and to attract more cruise ship business. The real big bucks ($ 2.5 billion) are going toward expanding the container capacity, but $ 150 million still is a lot of money that can only help improve Montreal's standing as a delightful cruise destination http://www.canada.com/montrealgazette/news/story.html?id=648a3586-fcc7-4481-af1d-e570b258f47c&k=6786
Ephraim Posted April 19, 2008 #2 Share Posted April 19, 2008 Absolute total waste of money. It's obvious that no politician has actually looked into this. 1. Most ships cannot make it to Montreal, they can't make it under the bridge at Trois-Rivieres. 2. Ships are getting larger and taller, not smaller. 3. Cruise ship passengers are notorious for not spending large amounts of money. 4. Tourism from the US (to Canada) is actually declining in Canada, significantly. Both because of the US dollar as well as because of the border hassles introduced by Washington. We can save the $150 million and put it to roads, like finally removing the rail tracks on St-Catherine instead of repaving them every summer.
