The Pearl to Alaska in May

Recommended Posts

We will be on the Pearl in a few more weeks. Just a few last minute questions. I have searched the forums with no luck.

At dinner, do most people wear "resort casual" spring type clothing or winter clothing since you are in Alaska? In other words, long sleeves vs. short sleeves, etc.

Are jeans considered "resort casual"?

Pack a swimsuit to Alaska? I didn't know if heated/covered pool or hottubs.

Is there an optional formal night on the Pearl to Alaska? If so, how formal? Do most guys were suits/ties and women dresses?

formal night is totally optional, on any NCL cruise. you will see some dress up, mostly for family photos..but most will be in resort casual. resort casual can be long or short sleeve, depending on tolerance for the air conditioning on the ship. some areas may be cool and other areas, like around the casino, may be warm. short sleeves with some type of light cover-up, works well.

one of the main dining may NOT allow jeans, the other will. nice jeans are accepts in all the specialities.

NCL doesn't have any pools with a cover...if the weather is nice, you will see some..especially on sea days...in the pools.

that's why we say to dress in layers, even on the ship....

I spoke with an NCL customer service rep just last night. She did tell me that jeans are accpetable in the dining room on NCL ships. I was quite surprised.

I was ready to cancel last week but other cruisers talked me out of it. Thanks Toyz! I forced myself to go shopping on Friday (payday) and found a pair of jeans, and a sweater, and a hoodie, and some socks...

I'll probably freeze to death, but in my OB they can say I died cruising!:o

so far, weather.com has the temps at high 40s to low 50s (during the day) and sunny. not bad!

the views will take your breath away, before the cold does.

(sounds like a good shopping trip, the hoodie will be great)

Let's clarify the information given to HeavySurf by NCL Customer Disservice.. (as usual, not telling the whole truth.)

Jeans are allowed in all dinng venues on all nights with the EXCEPTION of one of the two main dining rooms. This dining room is always identified in the Freestyle Daily or at the door to the restaurant. Since both main restaurants serve basically the same menu, then it is not a big deal for those who wish to wear jeans.

All formal nights are OPTIONAL in all dining venues. In fact less than half will be dressed up (I found an even smaller % on Alaska cruises) and that will range from tuxes down to shirt & tie. Everyone else will be in resort casual. (polo shirts, kahki pants, sneakers are always acceptable in all dining venues. No shorts or t-shirts.)

That is the joy of Freestyle, the ability to wear what you want and not be forced to dress up if you choose not to. (or to be able to dress up, if that is your cup of tea....)

We will be on the Pearl the week before you. It is currently snowing in Seattle. You will still need winter clothing this early in the season. Layering is the way to go they say. Long sleeves, jackets, hoodies, hat, gloves, warm socks, raincoat definitely. I would pack a swimsuit in case you want to go to the spa and soak. A cover up for when you get out. Formal night ranges from relaxed to cocktail wear, mostly for those wanting their picture taken. I would not bother with a suit and tie...it's vacation!! How about a pair of Dockers and a nice shirt with cable knit pullover sweater?
