When we took a cruise a FEW YEARS AGO i NOTICED A dfs AT THE PIER BEFORE BOARDING AND HAVE READ ABOUT PEOPLE BUYING THERE BEFORE THE CRUISE. wE WILL BE STOPPING AT sAN jUAN DURING OUR CRUISE AND WONDER IF IT PAYS TO BUY ANYTHING THERE OR LIMIT OUR PURCHASES TO sT. tHOMAS. aNY EXPERIENCE? If you are boarding in San Juan you can buy and take to your state room the liquior in your carryon. If this is a stop you will get it taken till the last night of the cruise.

Not all cruise lines allow this anymore. If you are embarking on Royal Caribbean, there is a check point on deck immediately after you board the ship. They were "confiscating" liquor from carry ons, including purchases made right there at the pier duty free shop. Sealed bottles are held and not returned until debarkation. Water bottles, iced tea bottles, etc. that contained alcohol were discarded. RCI is pretty strict.

 

Other cruise lines appear to be more liberal with their policy.
