ToniL Posted October 3, 2004 #1 Share Posted October 3, 2004 I've posted a bit before here and in the Europe ports thread about my Civitavecchia dilemma and haven't heard much in response so I'm trying again. Problem - have spent some time in Rome, and are there on a Monday so Ostia, Tarquinia, Tivoli, etc. sights are closed. We're thinking about Viterbo or Orvieto, which sound nice, but we can't find out how to get there! Trains aren't a good choice, and bus info is confusing. We have connected with another couple so a driver/guide is now an option but we are cutting it close to find one (we leave on Oct. 23). Do you think we can find a taxi to hire for the day at the port? What would it cost? Or does someone have a whole other suggestion for us? I've tried searching the forums but haven't found what I'm looking for (could be my search technique!). Thanks!
joan24 Posted October 3, 2004 #2 Share Posted October 3, 2004 We are on an Oceania cruise in May which is also in Civitavecchia on a Monday. We booked Claudio from limo in Rome. He suggested Viterbo and Orvietto plus he'd stop where we wanted along the way. He charges 440 Euro for a full day, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for up to 6 passengers. We've heard wonderful things about him on the boards. His email is claudio@limoinrome.com. We've also been to Rome several times and wanted to see something different. Good luck and have a wonderful cruise. Joan
ClaudiaF Posted October 3, 2004 #3 Share Posted October 3, 2004 Claudio is terrific. He also has a website which is: http://www.limoinrome.com/home.htm and if he is booked try Papillions Service ( Max was our driver & terrific). both of these companies use Mercedes vans.... very comfy and both hold up to 6 people ( plus driver) so if you find others to share the car it's great. We did Orvieto, Montupulcino <sp?> for wine tasting and some other places.. great fun day. Here is Papillion website ( they do all over Italy by the way) http://www.papillonservice.com/index.htm
drwong Posted October 17, 2004 #4 Share Posted October 17, 2004 We found Paolo to be an equally excellent around Rome and its environs - check out his website, http://www.drivinguide.com and see if any of various tours he offers interests you. ToniL Posted October 18, 2004 Author #5 Share Posted October 18, 2004 I really appreciate everyones help. We decided that train or bus was not too workable for our itinerary in this port, but we have now formed a group of six. Luckily, at this short notice, we were able to book Paolo. We leave on Friday, and I'll post a trip report when I get back.
chazaroo Posted October 19, 2004 #6 Share Posted October 19, 2004 Something else worth checking is the Slow Traveller website: slowtrav.com. There's a big section about travel in Italy. What to see, where to eat, etc. Have a great trip. -chazaroo
