Help - really stuck!

I've posted a bit before here and in the Europe ports thread about my Civitavecchia dilemma and haven't heard much in response so I'm trying again. Problem - have spent some time in Rome, and are there on a Monday so Ostia, Tarquinia, Tivoli, etc. sights are closed. We're thinking about Viterbo or Orvieto, which sound nice, but we can't find out how to get there! Trains aren't a good choice, and bus info is confusing. We have connected with another couple so a driver/guide is now an option but we are cutting it close to find one (we leave on Oct. 23). Do you think we can find a taxi to hire for the day at the port? What would it cost? Or does someone have a whole other suggestion for us? I've tried searching the forums but haven't found what I'm looking for (could be my search technique!). Thanks!

We are on an Oceania cruise in May which is also in Civitavecchia on a Monday. We booked Claudio from limo in Rome. He suggested Viterbo and Orvietto plus he'd stop where we wanted along the way. He charges 440 Euro for a full day, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., for up to 6 passengers. We've heard wonderful things about him on the boards. His email is claudio@limoinrome.com. We've also been to Rome several times and wanted to see something different. Good luck and have a wonderful cruise.

Claudio is terrific. He also has a website which is:

http://www.limoinrome.com/home.htm

and if he is booked try Papillions Service ( Max was our driver & terrific).

both of these companies use Mercedes vans.... very comfy and both hold up to 6 people ( plus driver) so if you find others to share the car it's great.

We did Orvieto, Montupulcino <sp?> for wine tasting and some other places.. great fun day.

Here is Papillion website ( they do all over Italy by the way)

  • 2 weeks later...

I really appreciate everyones help. We decided that train or bus was not too workable for our itinerary in this port, but we have now formed a group of six. Luckily, at this short notice, we were able to book Paolo. We leave on Friday, and I'll post a trip report when I get back.
