Teenage Curfew?

Hi There,

Just wondering everyone's opinions on setting a curfew for my 16 and 17 year old daughters. This will be their third cruise and they want their curfew extended until 2:00. Is this unreasonable? They are what I consider 'good kids' with a good head on their shoulders - they just want to stay out later with their 'new found friends'.

This will also be the first time in a cabin on their own ....:( and :D at the same time!!

What are your thoughts?

I would say OK...We have cruised with our teenage children in the past and did not place a curfew on them.Usually the 16-17 year old activities last until midnight. The kids usually convene at the Pizza Bar and sit around and talk. They also sit around the pool area on the Lido deck and talk.

There is security guards who roam the areas especially later at night. As long as you feel they show good judgement.... I would allow it.

Why would you put a curfew on them? Where could they go? I too have teenagers, and as long as they are on the same ship, and with others possible some adult I think it would be fine to let them stay up as long as they want. After all it is their vacation too.

I think it's reasonable. You will more than likely find them back in their cabin by 1am anyway.

The only night of the cruise my kids tended to stay out really late was the last night. At 16 and 17 there is little for them to do late at night. My own children have found the kids who were the ones with the curfews were the only ones trying to stay out late. My children have never been given a curfew. So there is no thing about being able to stay out or have to be back. Normally by 130-2am they were asleep at those ages. And they've had their own cabin since they were little.

I think 2AM is too late for a 16/17 year old. There no reason why they should

be out that late. Being on vacation they should be in no later than 11 or 12.

Agreed, unless they are in an organized activity.

There is nothing for them to do at that time of the morning but get into mischief.

Why? You are talking about 3,000+ strangers on a ship and these are young girls.

You can get a set of walkie talkies, they now come in 3 and 4 packs to keep track of them,it's also great for when you all decide to do different things and stay in touch.

I think were going to see 2 extreme views on this. Parents (like me) who have cruised many times with our children, who understand the routine and what goes on and other cruisers (with either no children or never cruised with them) where they would question the lateness.

Bottom line.. I usually stay up late (close the casino)... I would often walk the decks and grab a ice cream cone before turning in. I would see groups of "older" kids (including my own) always behaving and never felt they were in anyway causing chaos or damage to areas. I agree it's their vacation to and OK to give them some freedom

Our teens curfew is 2am. As said above, after their planned activities are over, they like to hang out together eating pizza, not getting into mischief......guess it depends on the kids....;)

A ship is a small city, a lot can happen.

You are the best judge of your kids. Most kids on our last cruise seemed to disappear about midnight and generally that is when mine returned. My 18 yo stayed out later in the casino, my 15 yo was back around midnight. One night she came to our room and asked if she could stay out with 2 friends, I asked who they were and when the answer was Tim and Matt it was inside for her. If there was a mix I probably would have let her.

Anyway until you are on the ship, sometimes it is hard to tell what you will allow.

We didn't give our boys a curfew, but again they were boys and they were back by 2:00. We were also up and about too. I think that made me feel better. It wasn't like we were in our cabin sleeping while they were out gallivanting. We would run into them every once and awhile.

I am not sure what I would do in this situation. I know you said they were good girls and you aren't worried about them doing anything bad, but like orlandofl said it's the other 3,000 people I would worry about.

Somebody said 11:00, that maybe a little early. Compromise and say 12:30-1:00 if you are that concerned.

They hang out in the Club 02, until midnight or after, then yes, they head up to the LIDO and get some pizza and ice cream and hang out and talk.. I didnt witness any mischeif when I went around checking up on him. Just like the previous poster said, kids just hanging out talking.

I would just stress that they stay together, we even had this buddy rule with the boys and my son is 15. Our curfew was 12:30, the last night it was 2. Do what you feel is right for your kids and what you think they are responsible enough to do, you know them better then we do.

Just make sure your daughters understand, and adhere to, some very basic safety measures. First and foremost...regardless of how (insert the appropriate word here...) cute, nice, friendly, cool...someone whom they've met may seem...they should never never go into his cabin.

Regretfully the search is "temporarily down", because I was hoping to post the links to 2 threads recently on this forum about teenage girls being victimized by 1) 20-somethingish young men and 2) a crew member.

Your daughters need to understand these things for their own safety.

Good answer, especially a kid named Tim, they can never be trusted.

Runs and hides from Shelly.

I think everyone above has made very valid suggestions.. I dont really think the lateness matters- You know your children best.. and as everyone else stated- anything can happen on a ship.. just like in any city.

My only concern would be the later it gets, the more 'deserted' certain areas of the ship becomes..

I dont have kids, but i certainly remember what its like to be a teenager!

Just dont let them have a false sense of security!

Enjoy!

We gave our exchange daughter a 1 am curfew in January and let her pull the mentioned all nighter the last night. She said most of the other kids had to be in about the same time or at midnight so she never felt like the early bird.

I have seen both sides....well behaved kids enjoying a last slice or ice cream and drunk kids hanging all over each other in dark deck corners. You're the only one to know which one you have and what they can be trusted to do!

i would say that is absolutely fine.

I was 14 last time and my curfew was about 1AM so because your kids are older it is okay.

My 13 year old mate was allowed up till about 3AM.

There is nowhere to go so curfew shouldn't really matter unless you are going out early the following morning.

I am also currently in negotiations on this subject. We are travelling with 4 kids. Well, the 19 and 21 year old are girls, so no real curfew, but we have just cautioned them about being safe. And reminding them that we have early excursions two mornings and we will be getting them up!

The two boys, 17 and 13 will have some type of curfew, but it will be based on the activities that are available. And therefore, may be different on each night.

And they have been cautioned that if they get into mischief or are disruptive to others, there privileges will be limited. They may be on vacation, but so is everyone else.

I have to totally agree with you. 2am is VERY late and there is nothing going on at that time.
