If you found them different, then you will find deep Caribbean different. About being "safe," just remember that you are much wealthier than most of the inhabitants of the Caribbean. Don't flaunt it. Don't go off by yourself. Stay in well lit areas. You should be OK. You have already done the most important thing you can do to increase your safety. You thought about it. Many vacationers leave their brains at home and without thinking anything can happen. Work like a dog. Live like a pauper. Save all your money. Then Cruise! The southern caribbean is my favorite itinery.
