Call for upsell this morning!??

Recommended Posts

Got a call this morning for an upsell from our mini-suite to AB Penthouse for Alaska cruise on the Star leaving 5/17/08.

They still wanted $450/pp after I bargained with them!

We turned it down. Just didn't think it was a good enough deal.....for an extra $900 that could cover our wine tab for the week!!!

What would you have done??

The AB penthouse is a dream--2 bedrooms, and 2 baths--one bath is enormous with a picture window to the sea--and a full length window in the shower!! (There are shades if needed.) You would have butler service and a WONDERFUL cruise--if you ever get another chance--GO FOR IT--and go up on the 11 deck and try to take a peek while you are there...and check what the full price would have been...

Upsells are usually, mostly, frequently? in the few weeks or month before a cruise after they figure out who is going to pay to go. No sense giving away a room that somebody might buy later.

And, since it is that close, you would of course already have paid in full.

There are exceptions of course, but if you should realize they are trying to not only FILL the ship, but get maximum revenue before it sails. So, it will not be very last minute, but not 2-3 months in advance either, unless the low categories are selling out, and the high ones are empty.

Hi All, just wanted to up lift this thread. Anyone have any answers to the last two posts of this thread ???????

thank u

minimom:) :) :)

Sure do - no upsell until after you are paid in full in fact they usually start about 30 days prior to sailing. In rare cases 60 days. My upsell was 6 days before sailing. As many have posted book what you want, if the upsell fairy calls it is all upside joy.

We were offered an upsell for our Hawaiian cruise this past Nov. We had a BA and were offered an AD for 300 more p/p. We declined since we were happy with our cabin (on the 12th deck snuggled in between suites). We were able to do lots more in Hawaii with that money. It is all a matter of preference. We are sailing to Mexico this coming Nov in a KK (bottom of the barrel inside) and would love an upsell and agreed to accept up to $200 more p/p if it's a cabin we would like.

I've always assumed that, if your family has more than one cabin booked, there is no chance of being offered an upsell. We're only 9 days away from sailing and I'd love one! Should I turn off my (always on) answering maching or does that fairy leave messages?

Upsell fairy will call anyone - but not everyone - It truly is not based on anything - other than luck of the draw. We've received calls (were home to answer) Don't know if they'll leave a message or not. We've also received an email 4 days before sailing. That was for the GV - but the price was another $2700. pp - ouch and we had already taken the Deluxe Owners Suite upsell from the Courtyard Villa which had been offered approx 2-3 weeks prior to sailing. So, if there is unsold cabins/suites they will phone and whoever takes the offer first will get the suite. I did ask about moving more than one cabin into the GV and they said it can and has been done - so you can combine 2 cabins into a larger suite - especially if they think they can resell your original cabins. Check out the cabin (suite) price on the NCL site for your sailing - go through the motions of booking again - but not holding the cabin - you will see the rock bottom price the suite is now being offered at. Combine what has been paid for the original two cabins - deduct from the present price - and if the cabin is available - the sum will be the price of the upsell. This close to sailing - if the price difference is what you are willing to pay I'd call them (even tho this is a no no under normal circumstances). Hope that's clearer than mud :D

Do you have to be paid in full before the upsell fairy pays you a visit?

No, you don't have to be paid in full - depending on how full the ship is. Our last cruise people who booked in Aug for the Feb sailing were receiving upsell calls in Oct all the way through to Feb. It really is driven by the particular ship/sailing.

Our first cruise with NCL was in a balcony. After our first call from the Upsell Fairy to a suite we were hooked. We've gotten manys calls since. Some we've taken and others we'ved passed on. Our last one that was for the GV in January. Like the OP said, we traded up with 2 cabins. Our friends were in a balcony and we had a AC. There were 4 of us in the Villa. We did have to add extra $ but we thought of it as a chance of a lifetime! It was the most awesome experience any of us ever had! :D BUT if you are afraid of getting spoiled....you're right, you will be.

Boy, Diane, you've got that right!!! Spoiled we are!!!

We booked a mini the first time the fairy called, a balcony the second time and an AE the third time. We turned the first two offers down when they called for the AE to AA upsell, but accepted the 3rd. We would have been very happy in any of the cabins we booked, but couldn't resist that special treatment.

I'm so happy to hear you'll be sailing with your family and that sweet Grandbaby of yours. What a wonderful experience for all of you. Hope you get to share it in the GV again, but if not, you'll still have a wonderful time. :D It's all about attitude, and you and Mr. M have excellent ones.

I feel like we got so so lucky with our upcoming honeymoon... we were in an mini suite and were upsold to an AA Owners Suite!!! we jumped on it... i booked through a TA and the TA almost imploded she thought the offer was amazing.. she was almost more excited than I was... we paid a small fortune for the upsell... but overall we saved over 50% on what we would have paid if we had just booked the AA owners suite outright... and it is our honeymoon so....

NCl contacted our TA via email.. and our TA immediately contacted us and then immediately let NCl know that we would take the upsell..i guess if we didnt have an amazing TA she could have easily missed the email or failed to act quickly enough.. but we got lucky :)

I received an upsell call for our cruise in March. We went from a mini suite on deck 11 to a Courtyard Villa on deck 14 for $150.00 pp. It was absoultely the trip of a lifetime. Couldn't of asked for more. The only problem is we are spoiled. Doubt if we'll ever sail again without those same accommodations. The private sun deck was the biggest plus. Cagney's for breakfast and lunch was also a big plus. No waiting in line for the boats to take you to shore was also enjoyable. The VIP luggage tags were a welcome treat...I could go on and on!!!

Wow! That has to be one of the best upsells I have seen. It happens, but not to many folks since there are only a handful of those suites in the first place.

This has been the policy for sometime - re: random, you can not call etc.

I think the poster might have been "stunned" that the TA does not have to call the customer. I think that might be better said is that the TA is then supposed to call the customer. BUT - nobody can make sure they do it. Some TA's are just so busy they may not bother, or make the decision that you would not buy it, etc. etc. That is just life. Nothing anyone can do about it. Seems that lots of folks do have good TA's that do call them based on upsell stories that are posted.

I can't believe there are TA's out there who would ignore upsale offers. It's extra commission with hardly any effort at all. Call your client and give them the details, if they take it great, if not...well at least you let them know about it!

OMG! That is an incredible steal. Was that for two, three, or four? It's the best I've ever heard. The average seems to be $600-$800/person for AF to A3/A4 for 6-night to 8-night cruises. In fact, yours is the only AF to CV upsell I've ever seen reported that beats our great deal of $300/person (just the two of us; 7 nights). I've seen other $300/person reports, but nothing like your $150! Good for you!:D

Actually my experience was completely different... but it may be because they moved PoA and they had to transfer people over to PoAm...

We booked an AE/12008 on December 8 for a sailing date of May 31...

On January 29 we received an upgrade to AD/10016 as a gift for our honeymoon....

On February 19 we got an email from NCL (through our TA) to upsell to AA/12502

On March 15 our final payment was due.

So, we obviously got our upsell call way more than 30 or even 60 days out... and way before our final payment was made....

when I got our upsale call BA to AC for 125pp, i asked her how they picked me. She told me that if they have rooms that they are trying to upsale they start with people that booked with NCL over the phone then people that booked online then to TA's. It was our first cruise ever so anyone can get one. Only problem is I dont think i can settle for anything else now...

We were offered the same upsell as you on the Pearl, but for $600 per person (three of us). We turned it down after trying to work a deal. We were flatly told that it wasn't negotioable. I do realize that if we had originally booked a penthouse it would have been several thousand more and this was a good bargain, but frankly we just didn't want to spend that extra $1800. No regrets!

Yes, the fairy leaves messages. That's what happened to us. Arrived home to a message and we called back the next day.

The first upsell we received was through a TA, and she turned it down without calling us because she thought it was too high and we wouldn't want it. They called back the next week with a lower offer and she called me and we accepted. I stopped using her after that and now I book through our Cruise Rewards Specialist, but only after doing all of my own research to see what's available for the dates we want. Seems to work out well for us.

1) Upsells are always initiated by the folks at NCL's "upsell department", and not by passengers or travel agents;

2) They are offered on a random basis, as the availability situation warrants;

3) It doesn't matter whether you're on your 20th NCL cruise or your first ... it's totally random! Your Latitudes status has nothing to do with it.

4) If you booked through a TA, NCL will call the agent (and not you) with the offer. And according to the PCC, the TA is then at liberty to advise the client or (if I understood correctly) to offer the upsell to another client! [if you booked directly through NCL, of course, the upsell offer would come directly to you.]

I've been told the same. Actually, our PCC went further to say that IF the "Upsell Dept" knows you are pushing for an upsell, they will purposely pass you by. It's a "Don't call us; we'll call you!" scenario.

Just keep wishing. Someday it just might be your turn! We've been called twice and got sweet offers, upgraded to an AB (there were 4 of us booked) on one occasion and an AF (3 of us booked) on another.
