Sunscreen?

Is sunscreen necessary when cruising Alaska in July? How about on a charter fishing excursion?

yes, the reflection of the sun, off the water, can cause bad sunburn.

even from the balcony, 10 decks up...you can get it.

remember, over cast days can be the worse.

We keep sunscreen on the boat. A day that starts out overcast can turn into dazzling sunshine, and in Alaska, you can get sunburned even on a chilly day.

Well, I used to live in Alaska. Did not use sunscreen. I have had to have many "sunspots" frozen off previously but recent biopsies indicate skin cancer. I have an appointment scheduled for the removal operation.

From the questions I have asked and the research I have done online this particular procedure has a 99% success rate. Great odds! (Hopefully not entirely off thread.)

Our friend got a very bad sunburn while sunbathing on deck in July.

Wear sunglasses and a hat with a three inch brim. Last year I had a skin cancer removed from my lower eyelid. Three surgeries and a year later, it looks pretty good, can hardly tell unless you look close and see the missing eyelashes. I don't care if it's a cloudy day, I wear at least a 50 sunscreen and I wear a hat if I'm outdoors for more than a few minutes. Sunbathing? Forget about it!

No question in my mind the answer is yes, I personally use 30.
