Driving the island

Has anyone ever rented a car and just driven GC island? We've never been there before, but from what I can tell, it's a small island, similar to Cozumel. Some of the best times we've had in Cozumel, we just rented a vehicle and drove around the island, hitting all the little stops and visiting with the locals. We'd love to do this in GC when we're there in September.

Anyone have experience with this?

Just remember they drive on the left on GC. When you are going straight ahead it's no problem; the problems come with turning corners as instinct takes over:eek: . It took us about 1 1/2 hours to get to Rum Point from Georgetown as the traffic was pretty heavy in some areas. There are round-abouts at many intersections and if you don't know what to do when you go "round about" you may end up someplace other than where you intended to go. But you might see areas that nobody else on your cruise did:D

We rented a car on GC. We had to wait for the car rental to come and pick us up to take us to the rental place. It was on a Sunday and there were no stores open so we basically were waiting in a ghost town for the shuttle. Make sure you have the number of the place when you get to GC so that you can call if the shuttle is late. They were very late for us.

Once we got the car...not only do they drive on the wrong side...the driver seat is on the opposite side too. Very funny.

Easy island to get around. Pretty flat, nothing like the British Virgin Islands. Not lots of traffic so driving wasn't too difficult.

There's a pretty nice beach on GC that we spent the day on. In fact the assistant cruise director hung out there too. You'll kill me, but I cannot remember the name of it. They had a great food shack...fish was awesome. Drinks were good...hammocks all around. It was fun.

We loved our first visit to Grand Cayman so much (we were on a cruise), that now we go back for land vacations. We always rent from Andy's. Having your own car is the way to see the island. It's a very safe place, just use the usual precautions, and enjoy the island.

On Sunday there is virtually no traffic b/c everything is closed. But on week days, particularly Wednesdays when many cruise ships are in, there is a lot of traffic. And around 3 p.m. the "rush hour" begins for the locals going home from work and it can take quite a long time to get from one place to another. So if you are on a cruise ship, be sure you allow enough time to either return the car, or for the shuttle to get you back to the tenders.
