nola34 Posted May 16, 2008 #1 Share Posted May 16, 2008 Hello all, We are renting a car in Sydney in June. We have two options and 8 hours in port. First option - drive up the eastern half of the Cabot Trail and turning around in Igonish or Neil's Harbor. OR Drive the Bras D'or Lake area for the day. What would you do??? I hear that the scenery is spectacular in both places.
senator6 Posted May 16, 2008 #2 Share Posted May 16, 2008 We have done both and they each have some spectacular views and we enjoyed both. I thought the eastern part Cabot Trail was better, but we were lucky to have a sunny day. I would do the Bras D'or if the weather were cloudy or foggy rather than the trail. Just my opinion others may have more experience.

The drive to that part of the Cabot Trail is very nice but if it is foggy you can't see much.
Putterdude Posted May 17, 2008 #4 Share Posted May 17, 2008 Have you considered the Fortress of Louisberg, it is a facinating tour.
LongTimeTvlr Posted May 17, 2008 #5 Share Posted May 17, 2008 We are traveling with a family group of 6. All adults (at least by age). What is the best way, considering price, to get to and from the Fortress? We will dock at 8 AM and leave at 5 PM so we should have plenty of time. Other options of things to do in Sydney? lannp Posted May 17, 2008 #6 Share Posted May 17, 2008 Bill - Sydney has several small museums, and a casino. There is a Main St. with shops which is pleasant for strolling. The Fortress of Louisbourg is approx. 22 mi. from Sydney. Have you considered renting a car for the day? Outside of Sydney, there is the Fortress, Baddeck and of course the Cabot Trail. Our group has a couple of backseat drivers, may not be a politically viable solution, but I appreciate the advice.
lizbeth Posted May 21, 2008 #8 Share Posted May 21, 2008 Hi - We are also renting a car in Sydney on July 7 ... and we plan to go to the Fortress of Louisbourg. I didn't realize it was only 22 miles. What else would you recommend that we see during our short 7 hour stay? Are there some great places to eat in Louisbourg? Any "don't mis this" sites? Thanks for any additional information you can provide! Liz

I traded my wife for a Vicking hat. The only problem was she couldn't cook so they gave her back. It's a fun day. Also check on the Schedule of Sailing Tall ship "The Blue NoseII". Last time I was in Sydney in July the Blue Nose was in port and you can book a sailing tour on it.
