Skyglider Posted June 27, 2008 #51 Share Posted June 27, 2008 Not always. I wish it were that easy to avoid being bumped. As I said earlier, Northwest out of Detroit bumped based on the level of ticket you purchased. Since both DH and I were flying on free tickets using our NW miles, we were number 1 and number 2 for being bumped. We only got on our flight because someone else showed up at the gate (if they showed up at all ) late. That's a policy that would make us not fly on that airline anymore. But if all airlines do that then there's no choice. Also Delta and NWA merged so wonder if that will be their new policy? With reduction of flights due to high fuel costs, almost all flights should be full (read definitely overbooked) from now on. What good will frequent flyer miles be from now on I wonder? Just be perpetually bumped off?

On the same trip returning from NY, the flight to detroit was oversold. The NW agent there said they decide who gets bumped based on who shows up last for the flight. Other than they can't bump the guys that pay for business class, or people who are on a leg of an international flight (which I was that day.) In other words, there is no way to know what the airlines will do until they do it.
