critterchick Posted June 8, 2008 Author #3 Share Posted June 8, 2008 I just realized that I didn't do the wines by the glass, but I think I'll save that project for another night.:o

critterchick Posted June 8, 2008 Author #10 Share Posted June 8, 2008 The markup on the wine is pretty ridiculous. It certainly is on the lower end of the spectrum - my fingers were most uncooperative when I was typing in $25+ for wines that I can get here for $6-8 a bottle:eek: . On the higher end I think the markup is pretty fair on some of my favorites, anyway; there are a couple of bottles that are less than 2x retail, which is better than we find in our local restaurants. critterchick Posted June 8, 2008 Author #13 Share Posted June 8, 2008 So, who has tried some of these, and what are your thoughts/faves?:) My faves in the whites are the Cakebread and Sonoma Cutrer Chardonnays, which are marked up about 1.5x and 2x retail. The Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is nice, too, with a markup of about 2.5 retail (anything over 3x gets my blood pressure up). I love the Rosemount GSM, which Trader Joe's used to carry for $9.99, but no longer has.:( I've seen it online for up to $30/bottle, so $49 isn't an outrageous markup, either. I like the Malbec, Caremenere and Barbera d'Alba, too. I used to drink a couple of Pinot Noirs that dropped off the list, so I'm still experimenting with those. The Caymus Cab is wonderful, but more than I'm normally willing to pay. I would love to hit it big in the casino so I could try the Penfolds Shiraz or the Barolo, but otherwise I will only dream of them.
critterchick Posted June 9, 2008 Author #14 Share Posted June 9, 2008 OK, now it's updated to show wines by the glass - please note that this is only the dining room by the glass list, and what's offered in the bars will be more limited. You can click on the attachment or go to the link in my signature to see it. Cheers! RCI wine list 2008 - pdf.pdf
s&f4travel Posted June 9, 2008 #15 Share Posted June 9, 2008 Thanks very much for all your work putting this together. We may have to pick up some wine at port and have a picnic before getting back on the ship - that way maybe we can just limit it to one glass with dinner rather than a bottle. critterchick Posted June 9, 2008 Author #16 Share Posted June 9, 2008 You can always save your bottle from one night to the next - they'll recork it, store it and have it on the table for you the next night. Just mind that your waiter doesn't pour it all the first night - they are rated in part by how much wine they sell, so it's in their best interests to sell you a bottle every evening. I agree and this has historically been their policy. Matter of fact, the markup at the high end is less than most restaurants' markup. I'd rather splurge on a good bottle at those prices. That Jordan Cab on the reserve list is barely a 2X markup.

s&f4travel Posted June 9, 2008 #19 Share Posted June 9, 2008 Thanks for the info about re-corking. This is our first cruise, so I'm trying to learn as much as possible beforehand. Just found this site yesterday and spent most of the day reading comments and tips. - Sherry

woof22 Posted June 9, 2008 #22 Share Posted June 9, 2008 Critterchick, thanks for typing up the wine list. I used that as inspiration to check out the Wine & Dine Packages to see if they're worth doing. I went overboard in my analysis (but that's typical). Instead of retyping the whole message I'll just link to the thread: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=789821
