Can anyone help with advice re how to get to Pisa from Livorno on a DIY tour? Also same re Rome from Civitavecchia?

Heard that you can get a train from near the dock gates for Rome - any idea how long /how much etc.

Thanks for any advice in advance!

Have a look at this site:

http://www.europeportreviews.com/

The list of ports covered is down the left-hand side of the page - you need the section headd 'Western Mediterranean'. When you find the page for the port concerned, make sure you read it carefully - there are links to further pages which contain a lot of the information you need.

The other place to look would be the Europe -> Mediterranean Eastern & Western board here on Cruise Critic. These questions have been asked & answered many times there; do a search of that forum & you'll dig up some of the old answers.

1. Pisa

Take shuttle bus into Livorno. Opposite the drop off point you will see a tobacconist with a sign outside saying "Bus/train tickets to Pisa/Florence".

They speak good english and will sort you out with the tickets you need. You need a local bus ticket to get to the train station, as it is too far to walk, and also a train ticket. Same to come back so you need four tickets per person. Trains are quite frequent to Pisa. In Pisa, the leaning tower is on the opposite side of town to the train station so it is about a 15min walk.

2. Rome.

Take shuttle bus to port gate drop off point. The train station is about a 10-15min walk from here. Walk in the direction with the sea to your right. In the station buy your reurn ticket which was 9euro last year. This also includes for all local buses and subway in Rome.

There are two trains an hour and it takes around 50mins to St Peters and just over an hour to Rome terminee.

If you get off at St Peters, take the bus outside the train station and get off at the second stop, walk under the underpass and you are there. Buses run about every 5mins and its number 64, I think, but there is only one.

For all journey you must validate your ticket at the little yellow stamping machine before boarding the train. This time stamps your ticket. For the bus the machine is in the bus.

If you want to do a Rome tour, you can pick up the tourist bus at St Peters (was 15euro two years ago.)

Train times can be obtained from the TrenItalia website, available in English. There are fewer trains on a Sunday.
