coffee39 Posted June 20, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 20, 2008 We will be in Anchorage for a day and a half. We want to go to the zoo but what else should we not miss in Anchorage?
cjnky Posted June 20, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 20, 2008 Don't miss the Alaska Native Heritage Center! And if you're in Anchorage over a weekend, be sure to check out the weekend market downtown. Those were the top two for me!
MFH Posted June 20, 2008 #3 Share Posted June 20, 2008 We loved the Alaska Native Heritage Center - but - we got there about 3:30 and they closed at 5. We didn't have enough time to see both the dancers and the villages. Both of those started at 4. We could have rushed through the villages, but wanted to see the displays inside, too. SO, my advise is to get there earlier than we did!
prit Posted June 20, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 20, 2008 We are going to be in Anchorage all day on a Sunday. Our return flight is like at 10:30 p.m. So I am really looking for information on what to do and if there is a place to store luggage.
baron45 Posted June 20, 2008 #5 Share Posted June 20, 2008 Don't miss the Alaska Native Heritage Center! And if you're in Anchorage over a weekend, be sure to check out the weekend market downtown. Joanandjoe Posted June 20, 2008 #6 Share Posted June 20, 2008 Despite the information in the above post indicating that the outdoor market is open only on Saturdays, it is also open on Sundays. The market was great: on June 8 we saw a country singer and native dancers, ate lunch (Halibut taco and shaslik, the latter from a church operated booth), met and bought a calendar from Chad Carpenter, the cartoonist who draws the Tundra newspaper strip, bought three Russian nesting dolls and seven pounds of salmon (which was shipped home and arrived in perfect shape), and saw but didn't buy lots of other good stuff. Also not to be missed is the Anchorage Museum. We also enjoyed watching the fishermen, and the salmon contest, at Ship Creek. That's right next to the Ulu factory, which was a dud for us but a treat for others. The Ulu Factory has a free trolley between the factory and two places in downtown: the tourist information cabin, and across the street from the market. Joan wouldn't leave Alaska without seeing the Norther Lights, so we saw a movie of Northern Lights just before we left for the airport.
Jridou Posted June 21, 2008 #7 Share Posted June 21, 2008 We are going to be in Anchorage all day on a Sunday. Our return flight is like at 10:30 p.m. So I am really looking for information on what to do and if there is a place to store luggage. Princess held our luggage after our transfer , and stored our carry-on luggage at the Egan center. However the Egan center closed at 6:30 (we picked it up and carried it around with us) and Princess sent our regular luggage back to their office at 7 (They had told me they'd store it at the airport until 11pm) We ended up having to have them re-deliver it and we made our flight by minutes. Also we flew Frontier which only allows you to check in 2 hours prior. Sorry, no help here, just warnings !
rzyjzq Posted June 21, 2008 #8 Share Posted June 21, 2008 We were in Anchorage last week and one of the things we enjoyed was the Seavey Wild Ride Sled Dog Show. It last about 1 1/2 hours and was very entertaining and informative.

Joanandjoe Posted September 27, 2008 #11 Share Posted September 27, 2008 "Aurora, The Great Northern Lights" was at the Alaska Performing Arts Center in Anchorage through Labor Day. It's now finished for the season. There is an Aurora showm which may or may not be the same movie, at a store across the street from some of the hotels in Denali.
