tom_uk Posted June 29, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 29, 2008 Have a good look at this website: http://www.europeportreviews.com/ for lots of information. For example, detailed instructions on how ot get into Rome from Civitavecchia on your own. You need to scroll down the home page and look for the port names on the left-hand side, then click on the name.
LibraLass41 Posted June 29, 2008 #3 Share Posted June 29, 2008 For fear of repeating myself, have a look at the thread two down ;advice on tips and excursions, wev'e done Rome at full length on there. I prefer the 'essence of Rome Tour, and Brian prefers DIY!
murphyjl Posted June 30, 2008 #4 Share Posted June 30, 2008 We are sailing on Ventura can anyone give me some advice on diy excursions to both Rome and Pisa. I done rome as a diy with 2 kids under 5 . It was simple. You can see the vatican from the train only looks like a 10 min walk. As far as rome city centre goes, you can get around it using the underground. The ticket you purchase from the train station also covers you on the underground. From memory it only cost 9 euros for the ticket. i think the trip with ventura costs £90. I would say download the underground map before you go and study it. This way you will be confident of what you are doing.
Pontius Navigator Posted July 6, 2008 #5 Share Posted July 6, 2008 Murphy's price comparison is typical. A Copenhagen trip could be done on foot for about €20 each including entrance and refreshment agains $54 each. Our rule of thumb is this: If it is local then DIY. If it is extended, time critical, involves organisation - such as catamaran and snorkelling - use the tours. If you tried a more adventurous DIY excursion and the timing went wrong then on your head be it. Our TA organised tour of St Petersburg got back to the ship 10 minutes late - the police had blocked a road. If we had been on a private tour and later still, who knows.
