GPS for rental cars

If you are bringing your own GPS for getting around in a rental car in Alaska or British Columbia, Canada make sure that yours can direct you or do you need to purchase or download an update for your GPS.

We got a SD for Canada for our Garmin NUVI and found that we should have had it with us the day we drove around Anchorage and Palmer. My GPS would not direct at all in Alaska and we figured that SD I bought and left at the hotel probably would have been good to have. So we had to use the old fashioned map. LOL. Thank goodness there is about one way in and out so it is not too hard to get around.

But in BC we used it to find everywhere we wanted to go without a problem.

We brought our GPS and used it in the motorhome. Often it told us we were off the road, or in the mountains, etc.

My cousin lives in Anchorage, and she told me that many of the roads in Alaska are not documented (I think that's the word she used) and so not on a GPS. She said they can't get On Star for the same reason.

It did get us to the general area most times, and we were glad to have the Milepost!

We upgrade our GPS a few weeks before we cruised. We looked at

several NUVI models. Some did not included the Alaska highways. We

purchased the 260W which did very well for us. The only thing we could

complain about Magie (My kids call her naggie maggie) , is that downtown

the one way streets confuse her often.

We drove to Denali, Seward, Whitter, Over to Glennallen and did not

have any problems with our model.

Forget the GPS. It is useless.

Aside from the mountains that do not allow satellite reception, there is no map data, so your screen will show you meandering all over a flat surface devoid of roads.

Leave the GPS on the ship!
