salty dingo Posted July 12, 2008 #2 Share Posted July 12, 2008 I have never seen them and would love to on our Alaska cruise this August. Someone posted something about this being a bad year for aurora, but I don't know if that is true.
Chenega Posted July 12, 2008 #3 Share Posted July 12, 2008 It's not so much a bad year but there is simply too much daylight during the summer months to see them even if they are active.
Putterdude Posted July 12, 2008 #4 Share Posted July 12, 2008 Actually it is a combination of both......but never say never.
Chenega Posted July 12, 2008 #5 Share Posted July 12, 2008 Well, you can see fairly decent multimedia shows in Anchorage, Fairbanks, and the hotel area of Denali National Park.
LizC Posted July 12, 2008 #6 Share Posted July 12, 2008 My cruise has sunsets at about 8:30 pm is there a chance we will see it on the cruise? I'll stay up late if there is a chance wish we were doing Danali but can't do to work issues. So it is cruise only for us. Love to see some lights !!!!! bottom-dragger Posted July 12, 2008 #7 Share Posted July 12, 2008 click on #5, plan ahead and look at north of 60° (about the latitude of sitka) http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/AuroraForecast/ magic 8-ball says "North of 60° latitude, aurora viewing very limited May 15 through August 1. The auroral index should be 3 or more to see it south of this latitude." it's also usually too light or too overcast during the summer. ain't that a bitch?
