Dress Code Monte Carlo Casino

Is there a dress code for the casino in Monte Carlo? The ships excursion description does not mention it, but I have read elsewhere that men must wear a coat and tie. My wife and I were planning on hitting the casino on our own but wanted to make sure of that. Anyone been there lately? Worth it? What else to do on your own around that area?

We were there last November.

 

Coat and tie required at night. Lots of people from our tour went in WITHOUT a coat and tie. There is a fee - our guide had vouchers for those wanting to go in. I think this also allowed them to go in without passports. But if you want to gamble - take your passport.

 

We did not go in..... others said and I quote " reminded them of the shabbiest place in Vegas ". Small and dark. Not my words but theirs.

 

So I guess if you are used to Bellagio or nice ones in Vegas - skip this one.

 

We enjoyed "the rock" (Monaco) Saw the palace (not the changing of the guards - we were there too late), church where Princess Grace and Prince Rainier are buried and had a quick look at the Jacques Cousteau Oceangraphic Museum. Wished we had of had more time for the museum but then we are both divers and ocean lovers. Lovely gardens there too.

 

We then went to Monte Carlo (just down the hill) and we shopped a bit - then sat outside at the Cafe De Paris and had a crepe and cup of coffee and people watched. We could see everyone going in and coming out of the casino. Lots of Bentleys, Rolls Royces, Jags etc. etc..... but the tourists were the best part :D

I went to Monaco in 2005 (land trip) with my then-boyfriend and we went into the casino there during the day. They needed to scan our passports and we had to pay 10 Euros to get in. I thought it was very beautiful and historic and nothing at all like Vegas! It was very quiet and everyone spoke in hushed voices, which I thought was kind of strange. We wore conservative clothing, but there was no dress code stated that I could see. Most of the people gambling were foreign business men...the least expensive table was 75 Euro blackjack! I watched my boyfriend play for awhile and then left to go shopping. If a player wanted a beverage, the dealer rang a bell and a tuxedo-clad "boy" arrived immediately. I thought it was an interesting experience, plus my boyfriend won 450 Euros! There is also a room of slot machines to the right when you walk in the casino that you did not have to pay to enter.

We just came back last week. Royal Caribbean tour brochure said daytime attire prohibited sandals or sneakers, but everyone on our group was wearing sandals and sandals and there was no problem. While we are discussing it, I had a sleevless shirt at the Vatican. Had one with sleeves tied around my waist, but no one ever asked me to cover my shoulders. Only place we actually saw dress codes enforced was in Basilica in Venice. Have fun.

No cameras are allowed. You can check them. I was there last October. Many people who did pay to go inside were disappointed. The casinos in Las Vegas are nicer.

I just got back from my mediterranean cruise a couple days ago and went to the casino. It says there is a dress code and I wore a dress (didn't want to chance getting turned away). There were a ton of people there in shorts and sandals and it seems there was no enforcement of any code. I'm sure that changes at around 7pm when they open up the other table games. But when the casino opens at 2 there is only European Roulette and slot machines to play. I wouldn't call it shabby in comparison to Vegas - I would just call it different. It's not like vegas - it's a place all its own. A once in a lifetime opportunity to gamble at Monte Carlo Casino and I came out ahead :D

Hi, quick question...does the casino not open until 2:00 even just for viewing? We've been to M.C. twice and this time I want to at least see the cascino. Thanks for your help!

There is a glitzier casino just to the left behind the cafe. It is more like what you see in Las Vegas. The main casino is very formal, staid and quiet. Not having our passports , they took our driver license (and 10 euro) for proof we were not citizens of Monaco who are forbidden to enter the casino. Apparently they get so much from the government, they are not allowed to gamble it away.

 

They do ask for a coat and tie after 10:30 PM when we were there in May.

I was looked up and down by three different people before they let us in. I saw them turn down several people. They also scanned our passports before we could enter. It was neat to see..,..very ritzy!

I'm not sure if it is open before 2 for just viewing - knowing I wanted to gamble I spent my morning in Nice and Eze village and didn't get to Monte Carlo until a little after 2. Hopefully someone else can answer that.

Thanks for the info. What time of day were you going in? Also, an above poster mentioned the 75 Euro blackjack table as the lowest amount table game - does that sound about right to you?

There are two separate casinos. The European one is for high rollers. You did have to check your camera at the coat check. No pictures were allowed in that casino. We would go in and look around for a few minutes and then go over to the American Casino. You will find a lot more people there. They have slot machines as well as the tables in that casino.

My husband wore khakis and a polo shirt. He was not pleased to wear that all day, but he didn't want to get denied!

 

The "free" casino is right nearby, but it is nothing special. If you want something to see, go to the fancy one! It's neat to say that you gambled at Monte Carlo!

I did not remember the American Casino...we went to the casino towards the left where you had to pay and have passport scanned. This casino had table games and also a lot of slots (I don't think it opened until the evening), but that part was empty...most people were at the tables and there were only a handful of Americans (including us). The 75 Euro blackjack table was the lowest during the day, but I can't remember what it went up to at night. We were there in the afternoon and boyfriend had on jeans and a collared polo. I wore a just above the knee skirt and a nice shirt and we had no problems getting in, but we were the most casually dressed people inside the casino. I did have to check my camera and a small bag. The free casino was towards the right and was packed with people playing slots. It seemed very small, but I did not explore it. I would say pay the $$$ just to see the casino as it is beautiful and historic! Hope this helps!

According to the Casino website.. there is a 10e admission, table games start at 10e per hand (American games) haven't a clue about European games (e.g. Chemin du fair) and the dress code goes into effect in the evening. :cool:
