public restrooms in ST.John, and Halifax

Recommended Posts

I will be traveling with a friend in early August, to St. John New Brunswick and Halifax, and she has a serious bladder and stomach problems that make accessability to restrooms important. Does anyone know if there are listings of public restrooms in these 2 port areas? We are not taking planned excursions, just walking around the 2 towns, with perhaps taking the hop-on/hop-off bus in Halifax. Do the hotels or restaurants in these towns allow people access or only if they are eating in the restaurant or staying overnight at the hotel?

Any info would be helpful, thanks.

In Saint John, there are public restrooms in Market Square on the main level just down the corridor between Tim Hortons and the New Brunswick Museum.

In Brunswick Square Shopping Centre there are washrooms on the third level just down the corridor beside the English Butler and on the lower level to the left of the drugstore at the bottom of the escalator.

If my memory serves me correctly there is also a public washroom at the upper end of the City Market on the left hand side.

There is a Tim Hortons on the right hand side as you walk up King Street toward the square and nobody would say anything if you walked in and went right to the rest room at the back of the restaurant. Actually, any Tim Hortons is a good bet. Nobody ever says anything. They have evolved into community meeting spots in the Maritime Provinces----just like the old general stores used to be a long time ago. You can always rest and have a cup of coffee while you are there-----and then you will need to search out another restroom shortly!!

In Halifax there are rest rooms in the Park Lane Shopping Centre on Spring Garden Road which would be just down the street from the Public Gardens. Again, if my memory serves me correctly there are also rest rooms in the Historic Properties shopping area. There is a hotel right next to the Historic Properties on the waterfront and if you go in the side door and walk past the front desk toward the pedway to the Casino, there are rest rooms on the left.

Scotia Square Shopping Centre has washrooms, as does the Casino.

I always like to know where I can find a washroom and I can honestly say that I have never found it to be difficult in the Maritime Provinces. With hotels, just walk in like you know where you are going and you can almost sense where the washrooms will be. Nobody has ever questioned me.

In most of Canada what Americans call rest rooms are called wash rooms. Now and then a sign will just say 'toilet'.

The wash rooms are always clean and tidy. Much better than what you will find if you come to Texas!

Canadians are very considerate people. I've never been barred from using a wash room. I have found some delightfully clean wash rooms in public and tourist areas.

Halifax is likely one of the easiest cities in the world to find a nice, clean wash room. It is something I really appreciate!

I wanted to add to what the local CC members have said. I've noticed stores with cards that say they don't have public washrooms but will make their washrooms available for those with Crohns and Colitis. I'm not 100% sure, but I think I've seen the signs at M+Ms Meat Shops and at liquor stores.

I know we use a lot of terms that are peculiar to Canada but I never realized "washroom" was one of them. That's interesting. I know when I ask for a "pop" in the states I often get a blank stare and realize I should have said "soda".

I used to say 'pop' as well when I lived in the far north. Now I just say 'ice tea' an entire concept which would have driven my late mother to tears.

Washroom makes a whole lot more sense than bathroom when you don't intend to bathe.

In Texas now, nearly all the washrooms are marked with pictographs making the question of which is which a serious matter.
