kickbacknrelax Posted October 18, 2004 #2 Share Posted October 18, 2004 mberli We leave on the Mariner on Sunday and received a letter from RCCL today telling us that GC was off the itinerary. Nothing about when they will resume visits though.
TWELVEOHONE Posted October 18, 2004 #3 Share Posted October 18, 2004 Grand Cayman announced last week that the port will be open begining November. Some of the buildings and beaches are still messed up but ships will be able to make a call to the island.
safety300 Posted October 18, 2004 #4 Share Posted October 18, 2004 Grand Cayman was hit hard by Ivan, they do hope to get back to allowing cruise ships in during November. The first in will stay there I have heard and it will not have passangers, but serve to supply much needed housing. Check out Caymen Net News for great information! cruisinqt Posted October 18, 2004 #6 Share Posted October 18, 2004 Cayman Net News has just released a news article stating that they will begin allowing 2 ships a day into Grand Cayman as of Oct. 29th.:) Many business owners are open and ready for business but their concern is over the lack of tour buses and transportation right now. That is why they will only allow 2 ships a day in the begining. :( They said that some of the stingrays were scared away by hurricane Ivan. They are beginning to feed the few that remain and are hoping to attract more stingrays before the cruise ships come back. The housing Safety mentioned is a permanently docked cruise ship to be used mainly for business employees and operators to stay in until they get their houses rebuilt. The best thing we can do to help them right now is go there and spend some money. Many of the business owners are very worried about the economy and whether or not their businesses will make it. They rely on tourism and without tourists their businesses will go under. Seeing tourists there spending money will give them much needed hope for their businesses and the economy.:)
cruiseman_tx Posted October 18, 2004 #7 Share Posted October 18, 2004 Since the island has been closed, what has RCCL been substituting with? Another port (if so, which one) or an extra sea day? Anybody know??
hstrybuf Posted October 19, 2004 #8 Share Posted October 19, 2004 Our 10/30 sailing of the Navigator is getting an extra sea day. That's the "official" word right now. I don't know if we'll be one of the two ships allowed into GC now or not. Guess we'll find out after we board.
