newbie question of autoprogreso

Recommended Posts

Has anyone taken the Autoprogeso tour to Merida in Progresso? We are considering it and wanted some input before we make our final decison. Leave in 13 days!!!

Without a doubt - Autoprogreso is the way to go! Are y'all doing a Mayan ruin and trip to Merida, or just going to Merida. I have toured with Autoprogreso three times and would highly recommend them.

If you want to explore/experience Merida, just take the local bus to Merida. The terminal is two or three blocks from where the courtesy bus drops you. Three dollars RT. When you arrive at the Merida terminal just walk out to the street, turn right and walk three blocks to the central plaza in the historical zone. Pick up a print copy of Yucatan Today in Progreso. It's a big resource for your day. The bus runs about every 15 minutes and takes 30 to 45 minutes. After exploring the historical center, take a carriage ride out on Paseo Montejo. 50 minutes for 20 bucks. Merida is a beautiful, old spanish colonial city and is very safe. Plenty of restaurants, sidewalk cafes, ice cream parlors, etc. NO tours are needed to enjoy Merida.

I think that is what we have decided to do. I see no reason to spend 120 for 3 of us when we just want to go and see the Cathedral and a few other things in Merida!!!!!!!! 9 dollars sounds soooo much better;) . I didn't know about the carriage rides, will they be easy to find like in New Orleans???? Will the public busses be easy to find from the dock???

When the courtesy bus drops you at the flea market, just ask directions to the regular bus terminal. Around the central plaza, you'll find the oldest cathedral in the Americas, built in 1561 and magnificant. Imagine the craftsmanship needed to build this that long ago. Also around the plaza you'll find the Casa de Montejo, the home of the conquerer/founder of the city, built in 1549 (now a bank), the city hall built in the 1700s, the governor's center, sidewalk cafes, ice cream parlors, etc. The carriage rides will be located across the street from the cathedral. The carriage ride is a MUST and very reasonable. The plaza is the size of a city block, well groomed and beautiful. Lots of park benches for resting.
