Noisy cabins?

I am a light sleeper and am wondering:

 

How noisy does it tend to be on cruiseships at night? I know it depends on your cabin's location etc. but is there any vibration from the engines? How thin are the cabin walls?

 

 

What happens if you have a family of five on one side who get up at 5:30 am when the kids jumping on the beds, and a group of party animals on the other side who stay up drinking in their cabin till 4:30 am??? :eek:

I've been on 9 Carnival cruises and never had a noisy cabin. Occasionally, I'll hear some noise from the hallway if people are very loud out there. I've never heard my neighbors.

Yes, it can depend on location. If you're near things like the casino or disco, you could hear more noise. Personally, I try to book in between decks of cabins so that I don't have something that above or below me. I think the walls must be pretty thick because I don't typically hear anything, with the exception of feeling the vibration of the engines when I was forward, but that wasn't a big deal.

 

Should you get the neighbors from hell, I would call security and have them take care of it. I think that people try to be considerate for the most part, but there is a chance and I would have no qualms about reporting them for noise if it's excessive (above normal conversation levels in the hallway or cabins).

Has anyone been in a balcony cabin on the upper deck of Carnival Triumph? I think that's where we are. What's that like?

 

I booked on the UK site, where they do not give you a choice of cabin! They are all guaranteed and all you choose is balcony, oceanview or inside! You cannot even pick a suite!

We was on the Holiday in May and you could hear our neighbors arguing constantly. I think they was in a screaming match to see who could scream the loudest. It was very unpleasant.

Fred, wow!!!! That would be horrible. I guess I've been very lucky. I've truly never heard a thing in any of my cabins (other than people passing the door). About half the time, I book a guarantee. Maybe I'll need to rethink that and only book an actual cabin. I'll definitely never choose this cabin.:D

If you're worried about a family of 5, try looking for a cabin that's surrounded by cabins that don't have sofa beds and pullmans in them. If you look at the deck plans, each cabin has symbols noting these things. If you look hard, you can find a few. That won't help you get away from the party animal couple on the other side of you, but it's a start. Another possible consideration is to sail when fewer people do. I'm convinced this happens in early December. They'll tell you the ship is always full when it sets sail, but I don't believe it. It definitely cuts down on the number of kids on board.

 

Also consider staying on a deck that a) has cabins above and below you - to avoid noise from deck chairs (beware the cabin from hell) and the piano bar at night, and b) has only cabins and no public spaces if possible - only the people staying on that deck will be there (generally). Other decks have people traipsing through the halls at all hours going from point A to point B ... or just exploring ... or just lost. Unless you're staying in a balcony room, the 2 lowest decks accomplish this well...and no one refers to those as steerage anymore.

 

I think every ship may be different, but if you're not too far aft, maybe vibration won't be a problem? We sailed the Rhapsody on deck 2 near the middle and had no noise problems at all. Not from vibration or neighbors.

Oh dear I have just checked the plans and we will be in a cabin above the casino or nightclub! :(

 

Hope we get an upgrade! We are travelling at the beginning of December - if the ship is not full does that mean we are more or less likely to get an upgrade...?

No, I didnt complain because I like the cabin, just Wendy wasn't happy with it. I can sleep through anything.

We were in a cabin on deck 8 on the conquest with cabins above and below us. I never heard a thing from either side or above or below, but, I did hear noise from the hallway. The first night I heard kids screaming past our door several times, then in the mornings at about 6:30 I would hear the steward loading up his cart (we were right across from the pantry). The only time I heard our neighbors was when we were out on the balcony and the people next door were yelling at their kids LOL.

 

If you're a light sleeper I would suggest bringing some type of white noise. I had wanted to bring a fan but my DH said he didn't think we'd need it, but every morning at 6:30 I wished I had brought one!
