Brooklyn Hotel?

We will be sailing out of Red Hook on 9.21.08 and have been looking for a decent / affordable place to stay one night pre-cruise. I just saw a deal on Travelzoo for the NU Hotel for $169 per night, including continental breakfast. It looks like the best rate on Expedia is $284. We are flying into JFK, arriving about 5:30 pm and had thought about just staying at the Fairfield JFK because it would be easy. Any suggestions as to which would be better traveling to Brooklyn the night we arrive and staying at the NU? Does anyone know if there are places to eat within walking distance of the NU and would it be safe to walk in the area at night? I know that sounds like an odd question, but we are from small town Utah. :o Also how long would it be and how much would it cost from the hotel to pier? Thanks in advance for the help.

the Nu hotel is new and just opened. Its about 2 miles from the pier and a car service will be about $10.00 and 5 minutes....There are many nice places to eat within easy walking distance. one of favorites is Downtown Atlantic which is a block away(and 2 minutes walking) also there are many nice and easily reachable restaurants on Smith Street just on the other side of Atlantic Avenue. this is a safe and interesting NY neighborhood. The Fairfield doesn't have any decent restaurants close by. the Nu is also across the street from the closed Brooklyn House of Detention which isn't a problem but I should just warn you its there....

Sid - Would the Downtown Atlantic be close enough to the BB Marriott to walk? Thank you to all the invaluable advice you give to us tourists!:)

Yes...it's about 1/3 of a mile.....Down to Atlantic avenue and go east(left) south side of the street between Hoyt and Bond...
