Samos shore excursion 12-6 Oct 7 08

Recommended Posts

Will be stopping for only the afternoon. Is it possible to see much on our own or should we book one of the ship's excursions which takes in:

1. Archeological Museum, the Heraion, Samos Wine Factory and Museum; or

2. Heraion, Efpalinos Tunnel, Castle of Logthetis; or

3. Thios Mountain to the Efpalinos Tunnel, Monastery Panagias Spilianis

Preferences anyone??

or is it pleasant enough just in the port area?

Hi JannieAnn

We spent two weeks on Samos two years ago and loved this island. It is the nearest island to the Turkish coast (3 miles away) so it also serves as a base for the Greek army. Don't be alarmed - the soldiers are very unobtrusive but in some areas there are signs which forbid you to take photographs. There is not a great deal to do around the port / harbour area especially in the afternoon as the harbour is lined with pretty restaurants and bars which come alive at night when people flock there to have dinner. Of the three options I would choose option 3. It will give you some spectacular views of the island and the monastery is wonderful and well worth a visit. Make sure you take a wrap / sarong to put round your shoulders - there are signs telling you to cover up. Are you also calling at Patmos? We took a day trip there on a local boat and had a memorable visit. Patmos is also known as the 'Holy Island' as it is where St John lived when he wrote the Book of Revelations. We love the Greek Islands and have visited many of them. We hope that some of their magic will rub off on you.

Thanks, Nylsor. Will keep option 3 in mind. No, we are not going to Patmos but are stopping at Zakynthos and Santorini. I'm sure I will fall in love with everywhere....lots rave about Santorini.
