Belize

Recommended Posts

We went there last summer. It's the first time our family split up and did different excursions at a port. 2 went cave-tubing and 2 went to the Altun-Ha ruins. We all loved it and would like to go back.

I went to the ruins and found them fascinating. They weren't discovered until the late 1950s and they are still excavating them. I liked them more than the ruins in Tulum.

There's no dock, so everyone has to tender.

I found the information I needed about which RC ships go to Belize. Thanks anyway. If it helps, we almost went to Belize on a cruise a couple yrs ago but had to cancel because of a death, but......everyone was raving about the cabe tubing and supposably the best way to do it is on your own through a guys name Reggie. If you go under the ports of call section for Belize you will probably be able to get a number or web site for Reggies cave tubing. Good luck and have fun no matter what you do.

We were scheduled to go to Belize in June 2002, but due to ship engine trouble, Belize was cancelled and we got an extra day at sea. Yippee

Now we are trying to go again on the Grandeur this September. I would love to do cave tubing, but am a little leary after 4 back surgeries (including a spinal fusion). I don't know how I'd make out sitting in tube for an extended amount of time.

Has anyone else that's had a fusion done this excursion?

My DH thinks we should do one of the ruins, but we're not sure which one to do. I think if we can't do the cave tubing, I'd like to go to one of the beaches.

Any more advice?

We went to Belize a couple of years ago and did a mountain bike excursion in the rain forest. We really liked it and it ended up at Altun-Ha Mayan ruins. On the bus ride back we stopped at a local restaurant owned by some Texans and had a great meal. I'm not sure if RCL offers anything similar, but man it was a great time. If you go in the rain forest take bug repellant, the mosquitos were active.

We stopped at Belize on our last cruise and we did cave tubing through X-treme cave tubing. Our guide was great and there were only 4 of us in the taxi.

To the poster who has had back surgery: I wouldn't risk it if I were you. In the shallow spots you had to raise your rear or it would drag or get caught on rocks and I would think that part would be especially hard on someone who has had back problems, not to mention the sitting in a tube part.

Last time we went to Belize the only thing that everyone agreed upon was the zoo (a zoo at an island, give me a break I said). It was one of the best excursions we have done. You can read more about it in my review of the Carnival Paradise New Years 2003 report. Enjoy. It really was fun and amazing. We are going to Belize next month. We are looking to do the Lamanai & River Safari Tour. Has anyone done this excursion before?

We are booking this excursion through Royal Caribbean. Does anyone know if they guarantee the excursion will be back in time to reboard the ship? We will be in port for 9 hours and the excursion is 7hrs 40 mins long. We are so afraid of missing the boat.

My family and I did Lamanai in Dec'02. We were on the Rhapsody and booked the excurion through them. It was our favorite of all the things we did. Great ride through the countryside on a bus and the boat ride to the ruins was a blast! Don't worry you will get back to the ship on time. One of the boats coming back from the ruins broke down, but the tenders and ship waited for them (since their excurion was booked on the ship). Our guide was very informative on both the bus and the boat. Take a poncho or raincoat. It rains alot and did on us coming back. The spray from the boat got a little chilly, but the ponchos were just enough protection.

SeaUThere-

If you have back problems, the hike up to the beginning of the cave tubing will probably not be easy. What was advertised as a 'mostly level walk' turned out to be a stiff uphill to get to the starting point.

Reggie had both a driver and a guide for our van. We stopped for a wonderful chicken lunch on the way back, and seeing the country was wonderful.

The tubing itself was a lot of fun, but VERY crowded.

Check out the Belize port of call board for more info.

Have a great trip!

Someone mentioned the 'restaurant' the tours stop at. We weren't going to eat there anyway, but while waiting in line for the bathroom, I could see the person 'washing the dishes'. I was grossed out. A quick rinse and it was done. This was last summer.

Just got back from going to Belize on Friday. We did Shark Ray Alley with a private vendor and it was spectacular. My dad and aunt did cave tubing through the same vendor and said the same thing about it.

Both can be done for significantly less than the ship excursion if you use a private vendor. Check out the Ports of Call boards for some ideas. We used Coralbreezelimited.

It was wonderful.

I did the Belize barrier reef snorkle last Friday and loved it.
Then again, I'd probably love reciting multiplication tables if I could do it in that amazing water!

We also did the Shark Ray Alley snorkeling, but we did a ship excursion, not with a private vendor. The crew was very helpful and enjoyable! The sharks and stingrays were awesome!! I wush we could have stayed and snorkeled for the whole time, but we did also go to a town and have lunch and get to do a little walking around and shopping. I would def. reccommend it!
