checking luggage to airline on board?

I heard you can now check your luggage direct to the airline on board and not have to take it when you disembark. We are taking Infinity to Alaska on 8-22-08, with my handicap mother-in-law, and will have enough to take care of with the wheelchair, and oxygen equiptment. If this is the case would make life much easier when we leave seattle that afternoon. Has anyone had and experence with this? I hope it is true

We used it after our Summit sailing in February out of Puerto Rico. We still had to carry our luggage through customs. After customs we brought the luggage to a specific room where it was taken from us and we didn't see it again until we picked it up on the luggage carousel at our airport. It worked great for us since our plane didn't leave San Juan until the evening.
