coconutball4u Posted August 13, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 13, 2008 I am headed on the Legend this Sunday and am curious how much cash I should bring with me. I am paying major tom with cash for $110 so there is at least buy beyond that any ideas how much? I don't plan on gambling. Additionally, are there ATMs on board? Will the purser give me cash and then charge it to my S&S? Any advice is appreciated.
Ehpride Posted August 13, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 13, 2008 There are ATMs but they charge a pretty hefty fee and can run out of money. Bring enough cash for whatever you need for ports. I'd sit down and write down each port, what I plan to do and how much I need for what I want to buy/do and then up it by 10% to give myself a buffer. So if I'm going to Cozumel and not doing an excursion but know I'll probably spend 20 dollars on taxis, 20 on food, 20 on drinks and 20 on activities and 50 dollars on miscellaneous items or shopping. I'd bring 130 + about 10% so 150. Hopefully I wouldn't need all of that but you can always bring cash home.
mcfam5 Posted August 13, 2008 #3 Share Posted August 13, 2008 You can bring traveler's checks with you and then have them cashed at the Purser's Desk as you need cash. You can also use them to pay off your Sail & Sign at the end of your cruise. I would not suggest taking the traveler's checks in port to use, just cash what you need the night prior at the Purser's Desk. Hope this helps! mr. cruiser Posted August 13, 2008 #4 Share Posted August 13, 2008 The general rule is twice as much cash and half the amount of clothes you were planning on taking:D
AZ Karaoke Girl Posted August 13, 2008 #5 Share Posted August 13, 2008 The amount is subjective but I suggest a good mix of bills & include lots of ones for whatever amount you decide. I had $40 ones (tipping porters, shuttle drivers etc) plus about $300 more for a 7 day Mexican Riviera & it was plenty for DH & I. Most of it was used to pay extra tips to waiter team, room steward, bartender in karaoke club for awesome service & the karaoke KJ for being a blast of fun. We spent very little in ports (under $100). Have a blast!
BigGreg Posted August 13, 2008 #6 Share Posted August 13, 2008 since were going to be on the same cruise ill level with you. Im probally going to bring about 3,000 2k in travellers checks and 1,000 cash. Plus my sail and sign bill. But your not a gambler so its different. I beleive the ATM fee is somewhere around 5$ its in the casino past the cage well at least it was last time I was on the legend. It usually runs out of money within the first few days and is not refilled from my experience. You have to figure, cash is only needed for gambling, and anything you do off the ship. The rest of the time its billed to your sail and sign account which you can add a credit card too. For myself I figure 1,500$ to gamble with $1,500 to spend in ports and a S&S bill with 500$ for excursions 700$ bar bill... im going to stop here. If i added this all together the price we spend on a cruise is a small fortune..
hillcountry Posted August 13, 2008 #7 Share Posted August 13, 2008 The general rule is twice as much cash and half the amount of clothes you were planning on taking:D :D I agree! We just got back from our very first cruise on the 10th on the Conquest, and I packed everything I thought I would need and didn't use half of it. mwsrccl Posted August 13, 2008 #8 Share Posted August 13, 2008 I would take twice as much cash as you think you will need. You can always bring it back with you!
Catrin Posted August 13, 2008 #9 Share Posted August 13, 2008 You need to think about the little things that might add up. Are you flying or driving? Airport tips, snacks, etc. Taxi Fares & Tips Porter Tips at the Port - to and from cruise While at the Islands - Taxi Rides, Snacks, Drinks, Tips, Beach Fees etc. Souveniers at Port Bingo Casino Video Games Room Service Tips "Extra Tips" if you choose Then I would bring $100.00 more - for a cushion. Cotton Posted August 13, 2008 #10 Share Posted August 13, 2008 This may help, but I'm not one to spend a lot of money. First, I pay my tips ahead of time, so don't have that on my S&S account. I don't gamble a lot, just slots a little while each evening. I don't buy a lot of souveniers, because I just don't need to...I bring my friends back home the mini rum cakes, and I may pick up a new wind chime for myself. I treat myself to a lovely lunch on each island. Taxi fare is usually $10 per cab one-way, wherever you go. I don't do excursions; been there, done that. I don't play bingo. Anyhoo - For a five night cruise, I normally take about $300 in cash. I do take a stack of ones for extra tipping here and there. Sometimes I come back w/cash, other times not. It varies with whatever I want to do.:)
