"le truck" question

Going to Tahiti Oct. 20 for 10 day cruise. I would like to know if "le truck" stops at most major hotels along its route. We are staying at Intercontinental for two days prior to cruise. Like to know if we can get to Papette from the hotel without taking a cab. We have transfers to the ship from the hotel on boarding day. Thanks

You might want to plan to stay at the resort--it's really great--we've stayed there a few times and have had plenty to do without leaving the hotel

Back in 2006, La Truck stop right outside the IC. I think you need to "run" across the street to get on the other direction one (going into town).

I am also staying at IC for 2 nights pre cruise. I was looking into going to Moorea for a day. You said there was plenty to do at the IC. What is there to do there?

We stayed at the IC for 2 days back in Feb 2008.We used the Le truck a few times to head into town. The pickup point is 1 block from the IC main gate. Took about 30 min to get into town.They drop you off,at the water front.Across from where the TP docks. The hard part is to find the the pick up point to ride back to the IC. Its is 2 blocks back,from where they drop you off!! It will be back by the Large main Market area. If you ask at the front desk at the IC,they will give you a map of the pick up area. It was not a bad ride,open air,bench seat.I think about 2.00 US. Enjoy!!!

We had no problem going back and forth from the IC to Papeete on Le Truck. As for the Intercontinental, they have a pool stocked with tropical fish you can snorkel in and there was live entertainment when we were there.

How late do Le trucks run and how often? Is there room to take luggage and use it to get to the cruise ship?

In and around Tahiti, the famous “Le Truck” is at your service. Basically it’s a truck chassis with an open air sheltered cabin and wooden bench seats. There are literally hundreds of these vehicles serving Papeete- nearly all routes commence and stop near to the market in the downtown area. Since 1991, the service has become a little more organised and six termini have been created to increase “Le Truck’s” efficiency. There are only two termini that will normally be of use to New Zealand visitors - depending on whether you are staying on the East or West coast. If you are staying on the East (Pirae/Mahina) your “Le Truck” will depart from the waterfront adjacent to the Market, whilst those heading West (Faa’a/Punaauia) leave from behind the market.

The use of these vehicles is VERY EASY, and can often be one of the highlight’s of a stay in Papeete, we strongly recommend you ride “Le Truck” at least once. Another bonus about the use of this transport system is the cost - still around 150CFP (NZ$2.48).

There are designated stops all along the circle island road, however, in many cases Le Truck will stop anywhere when signalled. Each vehicle generally displays the destination/origin, and usually the hotels passed along the way, on painted panels along the side of the vehicle.

Once signalled, just hop on, enjoy the ride, the sights and sounds until you near your destination or the final terminus. To alight, just press the button above your head, and after the vehicle stops, pay the driver’s accomplice at the roadside of the cab.

This system works very efficiently, and you’ll find the services very frequent during the day. Hours are generally very early morning through to late afternoon/early evening, Monday to Friday inclusive, although on the two major East & West routes, services generally run later into the evenings, and a limited weekend service is also available.

 

 

Me again - these can be very crowded and if you have a lot of luggage, you might have trouble getting it on and off - most though are open down the middle for folks to stand, so that would be a boon for you. There is a route that operates from downtown Papeete to the airport, but plan on being early as these guys run on island time.

Took Le Truck from IC into Papeete no problem. You may want to be aware of the fact that in the evening Le Truck does not run as regularly as it does during the day. I wanted to eat at the Roulottes and took Le Truck. The Roulottes open at approximately 7p-7:30p, and once you finish eating Le Truck Service seemed a bit spotty. You are safe waiting for the bus to come, but you may have to wait a while. Le Truck from what I understand is operated by independant contractors, and there seems to be no true set schedule. It seems to run most regularly during the day due to demand. Either way it is much cheaper than taking the van from the IC or a taxi!
