Rare flannbarr Posted September 7, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 7, 2008 If the hurricane destroys the docks or the port you are sailing to like happened to Cozumel and Costa Maya the past couple of years, then those ports are canceled and usually replaced with a different one. Cruisin Kay D Posted September 7, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 7, 2008 If there is a hurricane in western carib area, the ship will change itinerary to eastern carib. Sometimes they change the order of ports, sometimes they skip a port or sometimes they will substitute 1 western port for another one. The good thing is that the ship can move away from a storm! Last year there was a storm that hit Costa Maya and knocked out the whole port and the huge long concrete dock on which 4 ships could park. So that port has not been used since that storm and is supposed to reopen later on this fall.
Rancher Dave Posted September 7, 2008 #4 Share Posted September 7, 2008 Depending on the hurricane you may not know the specific changes before you go, but may learn of them as the cruise unfolds. Rest assured none of the cruise lines want to put their expensive ship full of passengers into the middle of a hurricane, that does not breed good press. Just plan to be flexible with port changes and extra day at sea etc... Be glad you are not pulling out into the Caribbean this weekend with Ike there. If you think you may encounter fringes of a storm while at sea take your favorite sea sickness meds with you just in case. Search the threads here for the various options. Personally in the worst weather a green apple did the trick, and it was healthy. Go forth and enjoy your cruise.
