scgirlatheart Posted September 7, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 7, 2008 Would anybody know if you need an international license to rent a car in Halifax? Has anybody done this, and if so what was your experience? What company did you use? I'm thinking of using Enterprise since they can pick us up at the pier. I'll call them tomorrow when the office is open, but just wanted to get a jump on things. Would like a car to be able to explore the city and go out to Peggy's Cove. My husband is disabled and we find the ship's tours hard for him to keep up with up.
peternina Posted September 8, 2008 #2 Share Posted September 8, 2008 your us license is fine. National has a rental spot in Westin hotel near the pier. (5 minute walk or so.) You can walk to the hotel ,get the car, pick up the man at the ship and vice versa....enjoy! We are in Halifax on the EOS next week.
jibberjabber Posted September 9, 2008 #3 Share Posted September 9, 2008 I am renting from Hertz located in the Marriott. Any idea how far that is from the dock? I prefer Hertz but will consider renting from a different company if they are too far from the dock. Thank you

If so, I think that one is the one next to the casino and it would be a 20-25 minute walk. There is a closer Hertz location located at the VIA railway station. That one would be about 5 minutes away. When you exit the cruise pier look ahead and slightly to your right and the tall (8-12 stories) brick building is the back of the Westin hotel. The rail station is attached to the hotel and is on the right when facing the front of the building.
jibberjabber Posted September 10, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 10, 2008 My rental is at the Marriott on Upper Water Street. I'll see if I can rent from the other location. Glad I asked. Thank you.
rookie10 Posted September 12, 2008 #6 Share Posted September 12, 2008 We just returned on Sat. from a cruise that included Halifax. I chose to rent a car in Charlottetown because I was also travelling with a disabled person. We rented from Budget and it went quite well. In Halifax, we took the "hop-on, hop-off" bus which was quite good. It is not an air conditioned vehicle, so it was quite hot on board. Good luck and have a great trip. 4evrwild Posted September 26, 2008 #7 Share Posted September 26, 2008 I wanted to book a car at the Westin Hotel in Hailfax through Alamo or National since I read that they were located near the port. We will be arriving on 10/21/08 at 8:00 am but the web site for each auto rental reports that they are not open at: 8:30 am, so I tried 9:00 am, 9:30 am, 10:00 and 10:30 am with the same response. Can anyone help me out? I don't know how people rent so easily when the web sites won't cooperate. Is there a big time difference between our docking time and Nova Scotia time? We don't want to waste time from docking till renting the car since we need to return it before 3:30 in the afternoon to get back on the ship. Thanks, Ruth
pdoeringer Posted October 3, 2008 #8 Share Posted October 3, 2008 In Halifax we rented from Enterprise. VERY GOOD SERVICE. They picked us up and took us back to the pier. If you have an Entertainment book They have a 15% coupon we used and got a 09 Dodge Caravan for $32.00. We went to Peggys Cove and on to Lunenburg. Lunenburg is a beautiful town and worth seeing. We took the coast road from Peggys Cove to Lunenburg and then took the "freeway" back to Halifax. Gas is 1.27 a Litre or about $5.00 a gallon. Thanks, Ruth  I can't answer all your questions but if you are having trouble with the web site you can just call. There is a 1 hour time difference between Halifax and New York; if it is 9:00 AM in New York it is 10:00 AM in Halifax.
