missingca4 Posted September 18, 2008 #1 Share Posted September 18, 2008 We will be sailing over Hanukkah. I would like to bring a menorah to dinner. Has anyone ever done this? Are there battery menorahs that we could have for the room? What have some of you done to make Hanukkah fun?

Battery operated Super Mensch Menorah from http://www.menorah.com/catalog2/shopexd.asp?id=4168 Some cruise lines bring a Rabbi or Hazzan aboard for services. Ships usually have a Menorah by the Pursers desk Pictures can be taken with or without a Xmas tree (Hannukkah Bush?) It uses orange bulbs that flicker like candles. We just twist in the next bulb each night. That would work in the cabin. I'm not sure if they would allow actual candles in the dinning room. L'shanah tovah tikatev v'taihatem - I know it's early . . .
rclcruzer Posted September 18, 2008 #4 Share Posted September 18, 2008 You can purchase battery powered Menorahs, large and small, at Walmart or Target as well. I think it would be very nice to bring it to dinner. If it's a real one that uses candles, I guess you would need to ask the Head Waiter about it because of the open flame etc.... not sure though. Don't forget to decorate your cabin door too! Very festive :)
QuickGold Posted September 18, 2008 #5 Share Posted September 18, 2008 I cruised last year on DCL during Hanukkah and there was a mini service held on board which was overseen by a rabbi.

Gonzo70 Posted September 18, 2008 #7 Share Posted September 18, 2008 The casino can be fun too. On Hanukah they replace one of the Blackjack tables with high stakes Dreidel. The only negative is if you lose your sea pass is charged; if you win they give you chocolate coins. They do pass complementary Manischewitz to all the high stakes players and in lieu of Bingo they hold a make-your-own yarmulke contest.
