asking for an upgrade

Extremely unlikely. If that's all it took, everyone would do it. NCL prefers to do upsells to fill high level cabins and suites in advance of the cruise date. That way they get more revenue. They are quite stingy with free upgrades, partly because cruising is so popular now that they rarely have any trouble filling the ships.

Anybody have luck asking for an upgrade at embarkation? We have a BA GTY.

Booking a BA GTY you have a ~99.9% chance of ending up in a BA. Book a BC or BA GTY and you could end up in a BA. The only reason to book a BA GTY is if the price was far better then selecting your own or if that is all that was offered at the time.
