First Time - Snorkeling in Hawaii

Hello fellow cruisers -

We are going to Hawaii with Princess Cruise in December and booked a tour called Maui Snorkel Cruise which goes to 2 destinations (Molokini and Olowalu Turtle Reef). Very excited about this!

Anyone have any advice that has done this?

Unsure about the camera situation....usually buy the disposible but there is such mixed reviews..We both have different models of Canon and should we get the case to go over them. It does seem expensive.

Thanks

Celeste

I have snorkled Molokini before and loved it. Hawaii snorkling is not like the warm water of the caribbean so you won't see the beautiful colorful coral heads and fans. But the fish are beautiful! Unfortunatly the boats will throw food in the water and that just brings up the ugly fish.

If you have an older canon point and shoot you might look on ebay or other like sites to see if you can find a used or overstock one to reduce the cost. While the enclosures are more expensive you have to ask yourself, "Do we want to take snapshots (which is what you'll get from a disposible) or do we want to take photographs (which is what you'll get from your canon point and shoot)?" Even playing with the settings, I was amazed at the difference between a "real" camera and what I was getting out of the disposibles.

We were in Hawaii last May. We snorkeled Molokini and at Captain Cook's Memorial on The Big Island (Hilo). Molokini was ok, but Captain Cook's was the BEST snorkeling we have ever done and we have been in lots of places around the Caribbean. We went on a raft/snorkeling excursion. If you get the to big island, don't miss it!

For the camera question check out the "My Aqua Case". It is a soft plastic case that securely fits over your camera - they have several sizes. It is a more secure fit than the DiCaPac - which is just a bag, my camera slid around in there a lot, even though I cut craft foam to hold it in place better. Both are good options for protecting your camera, I used them while snorkeling in the Mex Riv. for an hour at a time, doing a little bit of free diving (very little) but had no problem with water. The Aqua is about $35 and DiCa about $25. Well worth it.
