Hubby & I are celebrating our Anniversary on the Golden Princess, sailing 11/26/08. I so wanted to be able to purchase "leis" for both of us instead of the typical corsage! Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. We will have about 3 hours between tours, so we will be able to "cab" to a flower shop if necessary........HELP????

We found the prettiest and most convenient flowers and leis for purchase available in Hilo. When you exit the ship you walk through a large building with a number of vendors. At least one of them was selling really nice leis and gorgeous flower arrangements. We bought one of the medium sized arrangements for $15 dollars and it lasted for the remainder of our trip. In fact it still looked lovely the day we returned to Los Angeles. It really brightened up our cabin on the way home!

We each bought a flower lei upon arrival at the airport ($12) and we wore it several times. We got another one at the Old Lahaina Luau, which we only wore that day. But the leis we wore the most (almost daily) were the kukui nut leis that we made on board. I also saw them for sale everywhere we went (about $6). In fact, we still wear them.

The kukui nuts are a beautiful shiny mahogany-brown nut a bit smaller than an inch in diameter. They make a lasting memory. Check them out when you get to the islands. You'll see lots of folks wearing them. They actually comes in lots of colors, but the black or dark brown ones are clearly the classiest.

we found the most beautiful and long lasting leis in downtown Honolulu. Can't remember the name but it was a small flower shop in the old part of town. Not far from the aloha tower ( Ship dock ) The leis we got there were refridgeatedand with proper care we used them daily for over a week.

The best lei shops in the islands are in Chinatown on Mauna Kea Street not far from the Aloha Tower. Try a shop called Cindy's Lei Shop for all the best designs. On the outer islands Wallmart is a good choice.

Regarding the terminal shed at Hilo, our last cruise was several years ago but we were able to pick an arrangement as we were leaving the ship and they had it for us when we returned. We were surprised that when we did return, there were very few arrangements remaining--and they were the least attractive!

Again, about 3 years ago, there was a lady at the International Market at Honolulu who had a small stand and would make fresh leis right there. They were very attractive and very fragrant. Last year we were there but she could not be found. Pershaps the rent was too high and she threw in the petals. China Town at Honolulu has a number of very reasonable flower shops with a good selection. You can almost walk to these stores from the pier. As was mentioned, Wal Mart has the cheapest leis, if you are convenient to one of their stores..
