RCCL Navigator cribs no longer allowed in cat D1 staterooms

Hello, I wanted to share my most recent experience with you incase there is anyone else in the same situation who isn't aware of the recent change to Royal Caribbeans policy on cribs in catagory D1 balcony cabins.

After speaking to a cruise specialist I booked my Navigator of the Sea's cruise for myself, hubby, 3 yr old and 1 yr old kids. I really wanted the large ocean view cat F but they were all sold, so I went up to a cat D1 balcony with sofa bed, 206 sq ft.

A few days after booking the cruise I rang RCCL to confirm they would provide a crib for the infant, only to be told that two weeks ago they changed their policy and cribs cannot be provided in catagory D1 rooms when the sofa bed was in use. I was very upset with this as we had done it before. They also said that the upper bunks were not reccommended for children under the age of 6.

I asked them to check and after e-mailing the ship they confirmed the above, so we were left with the option of one of the adults going in the top bunk, upgrading to a junior suite or cancelling with a full refund of our deposit as I was allowed to book an unsuitable cabin.

As one of us didn't really the top bunk, we have unfortunately cancelled this time as the cruise was a special price and by the time we go for a JS it sort of defeats the object.

What? Yeah that's moronic. :(

That's the reason I switched to Disney for my last cruise because I couldn't put two small kids in a Junior Suite on Sovereign. The Junior Suite sleeps 3...they had no other cabins except for a grand suite available so I would have had to upgrade to that to get 4 people in a cabin. So I went with Disney for a better cabin selection.

So I am trying to wrap my head around your situation....I have seen 4 adults in a D1...so how many people was your D1 suppose to hold? I know certain D1's don't hold as many people. So the crib wouldn't fit.

Which cabin did you have?

You shouldn't have cancelled, I would have taken it to the top to make sure they rectified the situation.

Hi, we had cabin 6354 which sleeps 4 people, with a sofa bed. The problem is apparently that there isn't enough room to have a crib when the sofa bed is being used. We have done this before in the catagory F cabin (outside), so I'm not sure if it access to the balcony in the D1 that might be an issue.

I was willing to upgrade but thought it was unacceptable that I had been allowed to make the booking for a completely inappropriate room and therefore asked them to discount the JS, esp as we will be platinum members after this cruise and would qualify for discounts on balcony and suites in the future. After 4 phone calls the supervisor would not agree to any discount, so we cancelled.

Yes frustrating I know, we never had anything to complain about previously with RCCL.

I'm willing to bet that this is a one off thing.

We have a D1 booked for a year from now, with air, etc. being provided thru RCCL. I highly doubt that, after holding the reservation for over a year, in the "name" of 2 adults and 2 under 4 children, they are going to come back and tell me, last minute, ooops, sorry, you cant go because we dont allow cribs in D1's......

I would encourage you to call back, try to rebook (without mentioning your prior experience), and ask if there is going to be a problem booking a crib into a D1. Bet a different CS rep tells you something different....

I am going to also suggest that you call back and see if room 1688 or 1388 is available. These are D1 category rooms that are as big as a JS at a D1 price. Plenty of room for the sofa bed to pull out as well as a crib.

What about telling them that your 3 year old is going to sleep with you, therefore you will not need to pull out the sofa bed?

How about bringing your own pack-and-play or portable bed (like a Peapod)? Not that you WANT to have to bring your own bed, but at least you could do your own thing in the room.

This makes me nervous. I wonder if this is just for this ship or it applies to all ships? I just booked a cruise next March on Voyager in a D1 and will have 2 10.5 month olds. The agent told me that she can only reserve one P-n-P, but I could ask for another when onboard.

Hmm...wonder if you could just ask for a crib once you get onboard or if it is through reservation only?

(I've not traveled with kids before - so I'm just talking out loud)

thanks I'll do that. I did say that my 3yr old would sleep on the sofa as a sofa and not as a bed but they wouldn't allow that. They basically refused to provide the crib.

I'll post again once I've called them.

I was thinking the same thing - they still said no????

Keep us updated.

Not sure if I'm understanding this right????

I'm on the Indy on Nov 29, 2008 in a D1 cabin...

With DH... DS (7) and DD (13 months)....

Cousin is also on with his family two girls, ages 2 and 5

Both of us have reserved a pack-n-play... are we not going to get it now??? Should I call??? Are we grandfathered in? I called on it 3 months ago.

I called RCCL and a very nice CS woman told me my D1 cabin on Indy will hold a pack-n-play. :) She also told me that because it was such a new ship... my son would be able to sleep on the sofa without having to pull it out. Guess we can leave the suction cups at home;) .

This is what I am saying.... I really think this is more of one CS rep being mis informed....

Can you imagone how many people have D1's, etc., reserved with 2 children, one of whom needs a PnP and one whom is going to sleep on the sofa? It would be chaos for RCCL to deny everyone boarding at the last minute...

Good news..........I've just called the reservations dept and did not mention that I'd enquired previously. I didn't ask for any specific cabin, I said I wanted a cabin that with a sofa bed that I can have a crib in, straight away I was offered a D1 balcony. I asked the CS to reconfirm that I could fit a crib in the room and he said yes, the only other option would be to go for a smaller cabin with pullman beds.

Amazing eh?

I spoke to 3 different CS's and a supervisor 3 times on my previous booking hense the reason for my original post.

Once RCCL have refunded my original deposit I will be re-booking.

A big phew for all those who have D1's booked already!!!

The one thing I have learned, when dealing with RCCL CS reps, is not to take any one of them at face value. When one says one thing, you can typically call back and antoher will contradict the first.

Congrats and happy sailing!

Sorry to burst your bubble but it is correct that if the sofa bed is pulled out on a D1 or E1 then there is no room to put a crib. I would seriously doubt the word of this last CS you spoke to, and believe the supervisor who gave you the original info.

Im fairly sure that OP is very aware that, should she choose to pull out the sofa into an actual bed, there will be no room to unfold the pack n play in the category D1 stateroom.

I think OP's idea was to not unfold the sofa but, rather, for the older shild to sleep on the sofa while the younger one sleeps in the pack n play.

But in post #5 she says she was told she could not have the child sleep on the sofa when it was still in sofa-format and not pulled out. Sorry if I have misunderstood.

No worries. It is probably also my assumption that OP would have older child sleep on the non pulled out couch.

I'm glad it worked out for you.

This is not that unusual of a problem. I went around and around with NCL on this issue when I was planning on cruising with an "under 2'er". I wanted to put both kids in the sofa bed, but they insisted that all children under the age of two were determined to need a crib, and the smallest cabin that could hold two adults, one child in a sofa bed and one child in a crib was a suite (not a jr. suite, but a real one). That was a huge price increase. I went round and round with them because I thought my son would be fine in the sofa bed with his sister (he would have been close to 2 at time of sailing) -- ergo we did not need a crib, but they could not override the crib requirement in their system.

Eventually as a compromise solution, they offered us a handicapped balcony cabin where the square footage would be large enough for the sofa and the crib, but we didn't feel comfortable taking the cabin when we did not truly feel we had the "need". We ended up not cruising with NCL that time due to cost issues.

That explains why my TA told me that we'll be getting a Pack N' Play and a high chair in the cabin. All I requested was a highchair. My 15 month old sleeps with me, and I hate to see the PNP taking up space in a cabin.

This has happened to me every time I book a cruise. Even though I just need one queen size bed, I have to book a room for 3 because they're required to book a room with a berth/sleeping area for each of us. All you have to do once you're on board is tell the room steward how you want the room set up (pack n play out) and he'll take care of it.

Best,

Mia

  • 3 weeks later...

We have two oceanview quad cabins booked on the MSC Orchestra - each cabin holding 2 adults (Hubby and I in one, and my mom and dad in the other), 3 kids in ours (4mos, 2yo, 3 1/2 yo) and 2 kids in theirs (4yo and 5 1/2 yo). There was NO mention of requiring or not allowing cribs or PNPs. We assumed the older two kids will be in the overhead bunks. In our room, we may bring a bed rail and let our 3 1/2yo in the bunk. Otherwise she and her younger sister will be on the couch, and the baby will be in bed with us. We briefly thought about a PNP but were worried it would take up too much space as I hear MSC rooms are tiny by cruise standard anyways. We were not informed of any crib requirement or age minimum for the overhead berths.....I guess it will be interesting to see how it works out when we board.
