I use them as my sail and sign money, a little out of my paycheck each month makes it so I dont have a credit card bill after my cruise.

Cathy :)

Wow, so if I buy $500 worth of Funship Dollars now, I don't have to worry about putting cash on my sign and sail card when I get on the ship?

We plan on using cash for our sign and sail accunt, and starting out with $500, and addiing if we need to along the way.

I could see the advantage of buying these if the credit automatically went to your onboard credit account, but according to the terms and considtions, they have to mail the certificate to you, and in turn you have to mail it back to them, then its a credit?? why all the hassle??

furthermore, it says it cant be used for games of chance or similar, cant be used to pay gratuities.. so i guess that leaves only for drinks.. im trying to think but other than grats, casino and drinks. what else would i use an onboard credit for.. maybe the shopping on the ship i suppose.. then it further says.. they are not refundable...

hhmm maybe im missing something but.. that seems like a lot of trouble to get something you can use to purchase only drinks, shopping onboard, and a few others onboard things i suppose.. what im not sure.. bingo i guess. or maybe thats a game of chance...

TERMS AND CONDITIONS for certificate

5) This certificate is not replaceable and has no cash value if lost, stolen, altered, expired, photocopied or reproduced in any way.

6) The recipient will be required to mail this certificate to Carnival Cruise Lines at 3655 NW 87th Ave. Miami, Fl 33178 Attn. Special Programs MSRZ 356s. Certificates should only be mailed by certified mail. Carnival is not responsible for lost certificates.

7) This certificate may not be used to pay for games of chance and or similar activities. When used as an onboard credit it can not be used to pay for gratuities. This certificate can not be used and is not applicable for group travel or payments related to group bookings and amenities.

I have NEVER mailed them in, I have ALWAYS brought them with me and put them on my sail and sign account and used them for all the charges, including tips, on my S&S account.

Yes that is what I do! You take the certificate to the purser and they apply it to your S&S.

You don't have to mail them in. . .you can request that they just be added to your s & s account when you order them. This is what I did when I purchased them by phone.

hhmm Strange . Carnival should change how their terms and conditions read.. which do clearly state they have to be mailed, they cant be used for grats or games of chance etc..

why is nothing ever clear in life the way a child sees things? :)

I agree that is what is said in the terms, but I have used them this way. I guess if they wanted to get nasty, they could refuse them, but they havent so far

No, that is why children need an adult to look after them. You can credit them directly to your S&S account by putting your booking numbr where the address lines are.

Yes their site was messed up for a little while. We just came back from the Liberty 2 weeks ago and I purchased them before we left.

They did take them off of their online site, but they are still there. You just have to Google it and find the link.

No you dont have to Google it, the link is on Carnivals home page, on the bottom of the page, left side, under Gift Certificates

The gift certificates seem like a waste of time. If you have the money to purchase them each month, why not set aside the same amount into a savings account - or better yet, a CD that earns interest?

If you have a cruise coming up in say six months or so, or whatever long time away... Some of us like to purchase FunShip Dollars each month, so when we cruise, we can apply the whole thing to our onboard account. Then in turn, we won't have a large credit card bill at the end of the cruise.

Forget about what the rules say, you can use them for casino credits, you can use them for your auto tips, and you can use it for whatever your regular sign and sail charges would be.

We used them for our last cruise and will use them again. As stated in an earlier thread when buying a gift certificate just put your booking # on each line of your address and they will e-mail you letting you know that it was applied to your account as obc. It was nice starting the cruise with money already on our account. We also use drink coupons.

I have used these before and they are great for us! I'm glad someone answered the question about whether you can apply them once on board. I remember this discussion over a year ago and being worried about being able to apply them to the OBC vs. having to send them in by Certified mail 2 weeks ahead of time, etc., like it says. At that time, others on CC said they had no problems bringing them along and applying them, and I did it then too. Glad to hear that is still the case!

I purchased my first $50 about 3 weeks ago, and it came about a week later in the mail! I did a mini "doc dance" for that one! :D

When you purchase them online from Carnival's Web site, it says all that (must mail them in with your confirmation number filled-in, by Certified mail, etc.) plus that they can't be used for gratuities! Very strange, since the gratuities are debited from your OBC! Anyway, we've never had a problem with it before. Money is money, OBC is OBC, right?

It is a bit of a hassle, have to go to the purser's desk and all after boarding...but I would be doing that anyway because I use cash to pay my OBC.

Why do this? Yes, you could save your money in an interest-bearing account, (is there such a thing anymore?) or hide it under your mattress, or use a credit card that you pay off each month (LOL), or whatever. Not in my world. In my world, it is better to have everything paid-up ahead of time, lest you have to spend your cruise $ on some unexpected BS that may occur at any time and thereby cause you to have to cancel said cruise. I need vacation 2x/year, and I set aside money for that that is not touchable for other reasons. I like to have it all paid for before I get there, and if some crazy thing comes up after all that, DARN! Sorry, can't help ya!
