J & G Posted October 13, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 13, 2008 We only have a couple of hour stop in Castries....what is there to do for such a short time? Wow! You don't have much time there at all! In Casties there is a place called Caribelle Batik that has wonderful batik linens and clothing and a FANTASTIC view from the back deck! There is also a straw market in Castries, but we were not at all impressed. If you want t-shirts, it's fine....otherwise, it's just dark and hot! Saturdays are more interesting as that is when the locals bring their garden produce into Castries and set up shop on blankets at the market. You might have time for a quick trip to Reduit Beach. You will have to ask your cab driver....it is a fantastic beach less than 10 miles from Castries. Unfortunately, the traffic is pretty bad and that makes the trip take longer. No matter what you choose, you will find the people to be some of the nicest anywhere! They seem to actually like Americans (or at least the money we spend there :) )
stello Posted October 14, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 14, 2008 When are you cruising? I am also looking for other cruisers to join me on the 3 hour tour offered by Serenity Vacations / Tours. Trying to get a small group together for the free offer on all their islands.
davidnsteph Posted October 14, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 14, 2008 When we were on the Emerald Princess last February, we found Castries, St. Lucia to be a great port to explore. It was not like other tourist-oriented ports of the Caribbean. Castries was more urban, with several office builidings. The local citizens were going about their daily routine of work, shopping and school. The Catholic Cathedral was unique and beautiful, with a bright and colorful interior. The city market had a special aroma and ambience. We also felt pretty safe, and we stayed within about 10 city blocks from the ship. We have been to numerous Caribbean ports, and Castries was a special place that gave us a pleasant impression. It is worth exploring. sailingaway12 Posted October 14, 2008 #5 Share Posted October 14, 2008 cruzndiz have you looked up serenity's rhythm discovery tour yet? If you are like rum that one might be for you. I think you do a short tour of Castries,Marigot Bay and end up at the rum distillery. It's a pity serenity didn't have that tour when we went to St.lucia because they would then have to carry me out on a stretcher.:)
cruzndiz Posted November 18, 2008 Author #6 Share Posted November 18, 2008 My cruise ship offers a Country Beach Excursion which takes a rugged trail tour along the east coast, stop @ Tropica Gardens for fresh fruit, then onto Anse La Vouette for a beach break before returning to the ship. Has anyone done this?? How long might it take to get from Ship to Beach -- trying to figure out just how much time we'd have ON the beach itself. Thanks!
