Rare Kinkacruiser Posted October 15, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 15, 2008 Hi there, Just bought our first sets of snorkel gear and am keen to know if removing the protective film from the mask to reduce/eliminate fogging will be OK. I have read numerous posts about the toothapste rub, which I am keen to do, but wonder why the manufacturer only suggests rubbing saliva onto the lens to prevent fogging. Does the saliva rub alone work at all for defogging? Will removing the film only make the mask glass less impact-resistant? Just feeling a bit unsure about new techniques. Thanks for your help. Cheers, Kinka

Cheers, Kinka Saliva is ok after the mask has been initially treated. To get the silicone layer off..... rub toothpaste on the lenses... inside and out.... and leave overnight. Wash it off the next morning... and your mask will be ready to use!! If you don't like the idea of saliva, you can make a mix of baby shampoo and water, spray the mask, and rinse off JUST BEFORE you enter the water. If you do it too far in advance, the mask will fog up again. Sue PADI diving instructor.
bruce-r Posted October 16, 2008 #3 Share Posted October 16, 2008 Yep, toothpaste, but I don't believe that you have to leave it on overnight. Just rub it in for a few minutes, then rinse.
