Cruise excursion

We will be going to Belize on the NCL Spirit in December. I have never been on a cruise before and had a question. If you do a cruise excursion (not an outside vendor) can you "miss the boat"? The reason I ask is one of the boat sponsored excursions is over 7 hours long and the boat is only there for 10 hours. What happens if something goes wrong?

The ship will wait for you if you are on a ship excursion, if you are on your own and something happens, they don't wait.

Something else to consider is that in Belize you are brought to shore by tender. So you need to allow time for that if you are going on your own.

But if you decide to go out on your own make sure you have your camera. The sight of your ship sailing off into the sunset is a spectacular view that you will not soon forget.
