Short day on Grenada, what's the best?

Last time I was in Grenada it was 19 years ago and I can't remember much about the island.

This time we have a short day on Greanada; our ship leaves 3:30 pm. I have decided not to do an excursion or tour, but can't decide what we should do.

What is Grenada known for?

If you're feeling energetic, take a walk through the market and past the churches (still roofless from Hurricane Ivan) and the Parliament Building up Cemetery Hill. Graves from the early 1800s next to quite recent ones. There used to be a "headstone" of Maurice Bishop there, don't know if it's been found since it blew away in Ivan.

Get a bite to eat and a cool drink at Deyna's Tasty Foods (try the "Fix Up" - a sampler of everything fixed that day. It's across the street from the cruise ship dock to the left. It's mostly a "locals" restaurant, but it's been written up in at least three travel magazines.

The Carenage is pretty much empty of tourist-type places these days, due to the new Cruise ship terminal and Esplanade Mall. Still worth a looksee, be sure to check out Tikal and ArtFabrik for quality locally made items! They're on the hill, over to the Carenage. The National Museum is also well worth a visit, as is Fort George.

Stock up on spices at the vendors market! BTW, what Grenadians call "saffron" is what we know as tumeric.

We didn't want to do a tour, so we took a cab to the Aquarium restaurant at Magazine Beach. Simply amazing. You can sit outside on a deck on the beach with the crystal clear water and white sand at your feet, or you can lie on the sand, swim, etc. Food was good and drinks were plentiful. If you want to swim, bring water shoes, the beach is a little rocky. It was quiet and peaceful. A gorgeous spot.

The chocolate processing at Belmont is very interesting.

Whatinell, we've done over 20-25 hours of tours (without seeing the same places!). Absolutely fascinating island; my favorite!!!

Hey, Tuck... did you hire Mandoo for your 20-25 hours of tours in Granada or is there someone else you might recommend?? We'd love to tour the island but have made no plans, yet.

We just recently returned and spent a wonderful day with Ian from Sunsation tours (reservations@grenadasunsation.com . He charged $25per hour whether you have two people or four. Not sure if you have more in your group. He spent six hours showing us the island and filling us with information historical and social. It was one of our most memorable days. Can't praise him enough. Very professional, pleasant, reliable and willing to show us common and uncommonly visited places. You won't go wrong with him. Enjoy Grenada. It is now one of our favorites.

We will be going to Grenada in February, and have a short stay as well. Our ship leaves at 2:00. So, all of this information is very helpful!

Thank you! And if there are anymore suggestions of "must-sees", keep 'em coming!!
